Knowledge

The student who successfully completes the course will be aware of the critical role of both the transition metal atom and surrounding ligands in the properties of coordination compounds. He will be aware of their importance to define the nature of metal-ligand bond and to define structural and reactivity properties along with their spectroscopic, magnetic and dynamic effects. He will understand that the exploitation of these properties are relevant in catalysis, in biology and materials chemistry. In the associated lab the student will be able to carry out syntheses of air sensitive compounds, using a schlenk line.

Syllabus

Ligands are reviewed with attention to their ability to stabilize different transition metal complexes: the ligand to metal bond is qualitatively discussed. Attention is paid to the thermodinamic stability, structure, spectroscopic and magnetic properties and reactivity of the transition metal compounds. Periodical trends as well as reactivity trends for transition metal centers are presented. Reactivity of coordinated ligands and general relevance to catalysis, biology and materials chemistry are discussed.
