Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

The French novel between the two wars

The course aims to offer an overview of the French novel in the entre-deux-guerres period. The introductory part will focus on an approach to the French novel in the first half of the 20th century, supplemented by the reading and commentary of texts considered to be representative. The aim is to provide the historical-literary notions and the basic methodological tools for an introduction to the forms and salient themes of literary production in prose of the period. In the next part of the course, three important narrative texts of the period will be analysed in greater detail: Jean Cocteau's Les Enfants terribles (1929), Louis-Ferdinand Céline's Voyage au bout de la nuit (1932) and Jean-Paul Sartre's La Nausée (1938). The aim is to provide the student with a model of literary analysis concretely exercised on the work of three particularly significant writers of the period, with particular reference to themes such as restlessness, the imaginary, self-determination and political commitment, fundamental for understanding the articulation of the French novelistic paradigm in the period between the two wars.
