Conoscenze

Knowledge

Economy and society in Italy in the 6th century.

In the process of transition from Late Roman World to the structures that characterised the early Middle Ages, the 6th century represents a crucial phase for the Italian peninsula: in social history, in demographic and settlement history, and in general economic, agrarian and trade history.

The initial decades were marked by Gothic domination, on which much new research has been produced. This was followed by a period of wars and crises, which historiography does not yet seem to have investigated in an innovative way. The century closed with the thirty-year period inaugurated by the entry of the Lombards into Italy, which gave rise to fundamental historical questions, still at the centre of any discussion and evaluation of the economic and social history of the Italian early Middle Ages.

At the end of the course the students will have improved their knowledge of the main changes that determined the formation of a new economic and social structure, together with the ability to orient themselves in the historiographical debate and in the panorama of the sources of greater importance in the discussion.

Modalità di verifica delle conoscenze

Esame orale finale; eventuale attività seminariale volontaria.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Through the oral exam on the agreed readings, students will have to demonstrate: a) that they have acquired a sure knowledge of the history of social structures and of the processes of economic and institutional transformation between the 4th and 9th centuries; b) to have acquired the ability to understand, interpret and critically expose the results of a complex historiographical literature, the documents and texts presented and discussed during the course and those subject of the eventual seminar exercise.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

Institutions of Medieval History; Latin; familiarity with at least one of the main modern languages.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

The lessons will illustrate the theme through the reconstruction of the historiographical debate, the presentation of some significant contributions, the analysis of the fundamental issues in current research. Attending students will be invited to actively participate in the discussion. In relation to the number of members and the conditions of access to libraries, students will be able to participate with any seminar exercises on the bibliography and on the materials presented during the course.

Bibliografia e materiale didattico

Bibliography

A detailed and specialised bibliography will be distributed during the lectures. For an initial approach to the themes of the course, one may resort to reading in particular chapters 4, 6 and 9 of C. Wickham, L'eredità di Roma, Roma-Bari 2014.

Among the texts that will be the subject of the course we would like to mention for now: the fundamental book by Porena, Pierfrancesco, L' insediamento degli Ostrogoti in Italia, Roma, 2012; the more general essays included in: The Langobards before the Frankish conquest: an ethnographic perspective, edited by Ausenda, Giorgio and Delogu, Paolo, Woodbridge (2009) and in I Longobardi. Dalla caduta dell'Impero all'alba dell'Italia, Exhibition Catalogue (Turin 27 September 2007- 6 January 2008), edited by Brogiolo, Gian Pietro and Chavarría Arnau, Alexandra, Milan 2007.

.

Assessment methods

Final oral exam on the agreed individual program. Depending on the health situation and the number of enrolled and interested students, attending students will be able to take a significant part of the exam through the preparation of a seminar, discussed in the classroom (even virtual) and accompanied by a written report.
