La storia e i principali temi toccati dalla filosofia che si è sviluppata nel mondo islamico ed è stata scritta prevalentemente in arabo è parte integrante della storia della filosofia medievale e di conseguenza della storia della filosofia simpliciter. Nessun laureato in filosofia dovrebbe ignorare le principali questioni sollevate da al-Farabi, Avicenna o Averroè, sia in sé che nella loro relazione con il pensiero filosofico medievale di lingua latina. Lo studente che completa con successo il corso possiederà una visione generale degli sviluppi della filosofia araba nel periodo che corrisponde a grandi linee al nostro Medioevo. Il corso si terrà nel secondo semestre e sarà dedicato alla Fisica di Aristotele nel mondo arabo.
The history and main topics of the philosophy that developed in the Muslim world, mostly in Arabic, is part and parcel of the history of Medieval philosophy and, by the same token, of the history of philosophy as such. No graduate in philosophy should ignore the main topics dealt with by al-Farabi, Avicenna or Averroes, in themselves and in their relationship with the philosophical thought of the Latin Middle Ages. The student who successfully completes the course will get acquainted with the developments of philosophy in Arabic during the period that roughly corresponds to the Western Middle Ages. In the Sping semester 2023 our focus will be on the knowledge in the Arabic-speaking wolrd of Aristotle's Physics.
La frequenza è fortemente consigliata. Sono incoraggiate la partecipazione alla discussione e la preparazione di sessioni del seminario o elaborati da parte degli studenti.
Attendance is advised. The learning activities consist in the participation in discussions. Submission of oral/written reports on voluntary basis is encouraged.
Lo studente che segue con successo il corso, sia che partecipi ai seminari sia che studi da solo, dovrà dimostrare di essere familiare con lo sviluppo del pensiero filosofico arabo-musulmano, dalle sue origini nel pensiero tardo-antico sino all'epoca di Averroè.
The successful student, no matter whether or not attending the classes, is expected to be familiar with the development of the philosophical thought in the Muslim area, from its beginnings rooted in late Antiquity to the age of Averroes.

Il lavoro di gruppo e la discussione sono incoraggiati ma la qualità principale da sviluppare è l'attitudine alla lettura accurata di testi antichi e spesso sottovalutati.
Team work and discussion are encouraged, but the main quality that is meant to be developed is the attitude to the careful reading of ancient, often neglected texts.

Basic course in Ancient Philosophy. No Arabic required - the texts will be translated during each class and the working translation will be handed out on regular basis.

Those interested in this course are expected to follow our method of careful, patient readiing of the primary texts.
Students will be assisted by a native speaker collaborator.
La Fisica è stata tradotta molto presto e ripetutamente. Quella che è giunta sino a noi è la traduzione di uno dei più importanti traduttori dal greco all’arabo, Ishaq ibn Hunayn (IX sec.). Sono stati tradotti anche alcuni fra i più importanti commenti. Nel corso ci concentreremo in particolare sulla ricezione del libro VIII, in cui Aristotele discute il ruolo del Motore Immobile in rapporto al moto eterno dei cieli.

Aristotle’s Physics has been translated early and repeatedly into Arabic. That which has come down to us is the 9th cent. translation by Ishaq ibn Hunayn, one of the main translators from Greek into Arabic. Some of the most relevant commentaries have been translated, too. Our focus will be Book VIII, with Aristotle’s treatment of the Unmoved Mover as the cause of the everlasting motion of the heavens.
