Antropogenesi: miti, congetture, scienza
Sull’antropogenesi si è sempre interrogata la cultura occidentale, che per renderne conto ha costruito nel tempo un’ininterrotta serie di miti, congetture e teorie. Il corso ne presenterà una rassegna, dall’antico al moderno, prima di esaminare il succedersi di scoperte e ipotesi scientifiche che hanno poco alla volta popolato di antenati la genealogia di Homo sapiens.
Infatti, una lunghissima preistoria – milioni di anni – segna l’apparizione e l’estinzione di varie specie ominidi, i cui fossili sono stati riportati alla luce soltanto dalla metà dell’Ottocento. Da allora la paleoantropologia ha fornito un numero sempre maggiore di dati sul tortuoso processo di ominazione, alterando sovente il quadro generale, negli ultimi decenni soprattutto grazie ai nuovi strumenti offerti dall’antropologia molecolare, in particolare con l’analisi del DNA moderno e antico.
Western culture has always been wondering about anthropogenesis, and built up over time an incessant series of myths, conjectures and theories to account for it. The course will present a review of them, from ancient to modern, before examining the succession of scientific discoveries and hypotheses that have gradually populated the genealogy of Homo sapiens with ancestors.
In fact, a very long prehistory - millions of years - marks the appearance and extinction of several hominid species, whose fossils have only been brought to light since the mid-nineteenth century. Afterwards, paleoanthropology has provided an increasing number of data on the tortuous process of hominization, and often altered the general picture, in recent decades mainly thanks to the new tools offered by molecular anthropology, in particular with the analysis of modern and ancient DNA.
