Imparare a comprendere testi di varia tipologia di argomento storico, storico-artistico, museologico, archeologico e filosofico. Imparare a leggere correttamente e fluentemente brevi testi seguendo le regole dell’intonazione (sentence stress) e della pronuncia (soprattutto di parole di origine greca e latina). Approfondire la grammatica della lingua inglese a livello B2 soprattutto per quanto riguarda alcune costruzioni complesse ricorrenti nelle materie di interesse degli studenti.
The aim of the course is to achieve an adequate comprehension level of various kinds of texts related to history, art-history, museology, archaeology and philosophy. Also, to learn to read correctly and with progressive fluency short texts following the rules of sentence stress and pronunciation (especially of “difficult” words from Greek and Latin). The grammar studied during the course will be at B2 level, and will focus in particular on more complex constructions which recur in the above-mentioned subjects.
Nella prima settimana del corso svolgeremo insieme un “test di ammissione” che comprende i punti di grammatica essenziali per la partecipazione al corso e un anticipo di quelli che saranno trattati. Questo servirà per mettere in evidenza in anticipo eventuali errori e incertezze, che dovranno essere corretti o chiariti. Non si tratta di un vero e priprio test in quanto non garantisce o preclude la partecipazione al corso, ma è molto importante partecipare per capire il proprio livello di partenza e se il corso è adatto al livello individuale o se è consigliabile invece scegliere un laboratorio più semplice. Inoltre verranno illustrate una serie di risorse online che possono aiutare gli studenti a studiare o ripassare la grammatica o esercitarsi nell’ascolto di materiale di interesse. Intorno alla terza/quarta settimana del corso saranno distribuiti dei brevi worksheets con domande di ripasso sul lavoro svolto in classe che serviranno nell’autovalutazione del progresso raggiunto; due settimane prima della fine del corso verrà svolta una prova di esame in classe per familiarizzare gli studenti con il formato dell’esame.
During the first week of the course we will be carrying out together an “entry test”, which covers all the grammar points which are either essential prerequisites for the course or which will be covered by the course itself. This will help student pinpoint in advance doubts and mistakes which should be clarified or corrected. A selection of online resources will be shown which may support students in studying or revising grammar, and in listening to podcasts specifically related to their subject. Starting from week three, short worksheets will be distributed during the lessons which will help test and self-assess progress so far. Two weeks before the end of the course there will be a mock exam so that the students may familiarise themselves with the format
Conoscenza intermedia della lingua (livello B1-B1+). Per seguire al meglio gli argomenti del corso (che si svolgerà in parte in inglese) è assolutamente necessario avere acquisito questo livello, anche se la certificazione non è necessaria per la partecipazione al corso. Come riferimento per valutare le proprie capacità si veda la definizione dei livelli d'inglese nel Quadro Comune Europeo di Riferimento (CEFR).

Gli studenti che non hanno una certificazione B1 o che non hanno acquisito questo livello potranno frequentare nel secondo semestre il laboratorio inglese del Prof Martinelli che offre la possibilità di rafforzare le basi della lingua.

Il corso sarà indirizzato principalmente allo studio, alla capacità di analisi e all’acquisizione di strutture, vocabolario e pronuncia utili per leggere, tradurre, discutere materiale storico e storico artistico. La grammatica e le aree della lingua affrontate durante il laboratorio (a livello B1+/B2 intermediate to upper-intermediate), dunque, di cui si da qui sotto un elenco per punti, saranno studiate in relazione, in dialogo, con una selezione di passi (circa venti), provenienti da varie fonti – manuali di storia e storia dell’arte, brochure, cataloghi, saggi accademici, libri divulgativi, articoli di giornale. Durante ciascuna lezione, vi sarà una spiegazione di alcuni punti di grammatica, o pronuncia e poi una analisi di uno o due brevi testi che esemplificheranno questi (e altri) aspetti. I testi sono presentati via Power Point e poi regolarmente aggiornati sulla piattaforma di e-learning. Particolare attenzione sarà inoltre dedicata allo studio di “word stress” e “sentence stress” e la fonetica sarà incentrata sulla pronuncia di termini legati alla storia, alla storia dell’arte, e alla filosofia e a parole di origine greca e latina utili in questi contesti. Anche il sistema verbale verrà ripresentato con un occhio ai tempi verbali e alle espressioni temporali più ricorrenti in queste aree di scrittura. Una o due lezioni saranno dedicate allo studio della scrittura impegnata per abstract e didascalie per le immagini.
The course will mainly be concerned with analysing and learning grammatical structures, vocabulary and pronunciation most useful for reading, translating and discussing textual material related to art history and history. The grammar and language areas we will be dealing with (B1+/B2 intermediate to upper-intermediate), which are listed below, will therefore be studied in relationship to, and in dialogue with a selection of about twenty texts from various sources – art-history and history manuals, pamphlets, catalogues, academic articles, books for the general public, magazine articles. During each lesson, therefore, the grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary discussed will be referred to these texts. This material is presented via Power Point and the slides are then uploaded on a weekly basis on the e-learning platform. Regular work will be done on sentence stress and word stress and the phonetics will be especially concerned with terms relating to history, art history, philosophy, including words from Greek and Latin useful in these contexts. The tense system will also be revised in its entirety with particular attention to the most common time expressions and tenses used in written material relating to these fields. One or two lessons will be dedicated to examining the type of prose used for abstracts and image captions.

The passages examined during the lessons will be made immediately available online to the students and will be an integral part of the final exam.

L’esame sarà una prova scritta che rifletterà i temi del corso e sarà basato esclusivamente sul materiale usato nel laboratorio. Sarà articolato in sei parti (sentence stress; word stress; pronuncia di ed-ending; use of English (multiple choice); traduzioni brevi - parole, espressioni e brevi frasi dai testi esaminati in classe ; reading comprehension - multiple choice - di uno dei testi studiati). Tutto il materiale (lo stesso per frequentanti e non frequentanti) sarà regolarmente aggiornato sulla piattaforma di e-learning in modo da consentire agli studenti di chiarire punti meno chiari con l'insegnate durante gli orari di ricevimento.
The exam consists in a written test exclusively based on the materials examined during the course. It is divided into six parts (sentence stress; word stress; pronunciation of ed-ending; Use of English (multiple choice); short translations – vocabulary, phrases, and short sentences from the passages studied; reading comprehension (multiple choice) of one of the passages studied). All the material will be regularly updated online so as to allow the students to clarify any uncertainties during the teacher-student conferences.
