Conoscenze

Knowledge

At the end of the course the student must be familiar with the vector formalism, have fully understood the laws of Newton's mechanics and the first principle of thermodynamics, know how to apply these laws to the solution of problems involving the dynamics of systems composed by objects with ideal physical properties.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

In order to asses student's knowledge and skills, a written exam (or the in itinere exams) must be passed with a grade greater than or equal to 13/30 and an oral examination.

Skills

The course of General Physics I aims to develop the student's ability to associate natural phenomena, with their mathematical description, by formalizing through the laws of classical physics the behavior of mechanical and thermal systems.

Assessment criteria of skills

Every week the teacher assigns exercises (with solution) on the topics covered in classroom through which the students can verify their understanding of the topics. Usually the most significant exercises are discussed in classroom the following week. In case of further difficulties, students can also schedule appointments with the teacher and teaching assistants.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

The course approach is predominantly theoretical. The first principles of classical mechanics and thermodynamics are shown, supporting them with simple practical examples and deepening their application with exercises. When dealing with problems, the mathematical tools necessary for their solution are highlighted.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

In order to assess students achieved the final objectives, teachers will conduct a final examination.

Prerequisites

Manipulation of algebraic expressions, solution of algebraic equations of I and II degree, systems of linear equations, elementary geometry in two and three dimensions, exponential notation and logarithms, trigonometry, functions of a real variable, limits, derivation and integration of functions, differentials, study of functions.

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

Students should follow the lessons and exercises, study and systematically carry out the exercises proposed at home. The teaching is based on classroom lectures in which the laws and fundamental principles are described, with the help of detailed problems. In addition in class exercises are proposed and solved together with the students, leaving to the students the time to solve each problem on their own, before explaining the solution method.

The course is strongly based on the use of the elearn page, through which all communications between teachers and students are carried out in both directions (which are thus preserved for later reference), and which always contains all the updated information on course, texts, appeals, etc. and any notice regarding the course.

Through the elearn page, self-assessment exercises are also provided approximately every two weeks.

Teachers are also available weekly to receive students or their representatives individually, to personally discuss any questions regarding the course and any special individual needs.

Non-attending students info

The topics are listed in detail in the register of lectures and in particular in the e-learning site with reference to the text adopted. Interaction is recommended (also via e-mail if not otherwise possible) with the teacher.

Assessment methods

The exam involves passing a written test and an oral test. Access to the oral exam is obtained only by obtaining a grade equal to or greater than 13/30 in the written test. There are 7 exams (with a written and an oral test): 3 exams in the summer session (between June and July) 2 exams in the autumn session (September) 2 exams in the winter session (between January and February). During the period of verification of the academic year
(from June to February of the following year) a maximum of 4 written assignments can be delivered, as decided by the degree course.
The delivery of the "in itinere" exams is excluded from the 4 written tests.
The recovery of the OFA by passing the relative test is a necessary condition for registration to an exam (condition not needed in 2020-2021).
With the delivery of a written assignment the vote of the homework or the grade taken to the previous task is invalidated.
If you are rejected for an oral exam, the written test is invalidated. The oral test is in an interview between the candidate and the teachers, in the form of a question / answer,
requesting the resolution of exercises to ascertain the mastery of the various topics covered in the course.
