The learning outcomes of this course are listed below and both learning activities and examination are based on those.
After you have passed this course, you will have gained knowledge and understanding within the topic and you will be able to explain (interpret, understand, reflect and remember) the following:
Reading and understanding a scientific paper/article.
Basic tips and tricks about how to write a scientific paper.
Being able to have a conversation in English.
Daily oral and written practice during classes.
Two classworks (usually about grammar in November and about scientific writing toward the end of the course).
The students will be able to have a conversation in English and will gain a basic knowledge about scientific writing.

The students will be able to face a conversation in English, and will be able to write a basic paper/article about Mathematics.

Solid B1 Level
Scientific English:
· Meaning and pronunciation of keywords in Mathematics
· Understanding and translating Math papers in English
· Specific use of grammar in a scientific paper. Word order and conciseness.
· Basic information of the structure of a scientific paper
· Writing an abstract
English Grammar:
- Countable/uncountable nouns
- Articles
- Present simple, continuous and perfect
- Past simple, continuous and perfect
- Future tenses: going to, will and present progressive
- The passive form
- Comparatives and superlatives
- The 4 type of conditional
- The modals
- Time and space prepositions
- Link words
- Relative clauses/pronouns
Phonetics and Pronunciation
- The alphabet, pronunciation of vowels, voiced and unvoiced consonants.
- The “schwa”
- Intonation

Scientific Writing:

Handouts, pdf files and other lecture notes will be given during classes. For those who do not attend, they are all available upon request via email (in English) to the teacher.
The exam consists of two sessions, written and oral.
The written test is made of two parts:
-grammar (reading comprehension, grammar exercise, pronunciation, words/lexicon, translation).
-scientific writing (tips and tricks to properly write a scientific paper in English; writing exercises).
The student will be given a score for each part. To pass the test, students have to meet a MPS of 60/100 in each part.
The oral exam is made of 2 parts.
PART 1 – Pronunciation
- Explain the difference between long, short, and diphthong vowels: give examples [i.e.: ship (short), sheep (long) e shy (diphthong)
- The three different pronunciations of final -ed
- How to pronounce h and th (voiced and unvoiced)
- Pronunciation of math words and terms (see handout). Each student will be given 5 words
PART 2 – A written or oral presentation made of two sections: A and B
SECTION A – The following topics have to be included:
- Countable and uncountable nouns. Articles: “the”, “a”, “an” and “zero article”
- English tenses: when and how to use them, in everyday speech AND when writing a scientific paper.[Present simple, past simple, simple future, present perfect, and the passive form. Examples from a scientific article/paper are welcome. See also handouts given during lectures)
- The 4 types of conditional: zero, first, second and third. How to form and use: give examples.
- Comparatives and superlatives: give examples.
- Modal verbs: write 3 sentences with 3 different modal verbs explaining their specific use.
SECTION B
A presentation lasting no less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 on a Math topic.
A presentation lasting no less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 on Scientific Writing.
