Conoscenze

Knowledge

The student will acquire knowledge about the tools and methods for the analysis of literary texts and, more specifically, the poetic text; s/he will also gain historical and literary knowledge as well as a detailed description of the cultural background in relation to the nineteenth-century French context.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The verification of knowledge will take place through a final oral exam. The exam can be preceded by a written test during the course. Successfully passing the written test will exempt the student from the presentation of a part of the course content at the time of the oral exam.

Skills

At the end of the course the student will be able to analyze a poetic text placing it in its historical and ideological context, to describe and evaluate the elements of the formal structure, to extract thematic elements from the text appropriately without distorting their meaning.

Assessment criteria of skills

The student will have to demonstrate to know how to describe a poetic text in relation to the period studied in its formal aspects, to interpret its semantic elements and to place the text itself in the continuity of its historical, literary and rhetorical tradition.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

The student will acquire appropriate skills of accuracy and precision in carrying out activities of comparison and analysis of the literary text in poetic detail.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

Students will be asked to intervene during the lessons during interpretation exercises.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

The student should possibly possess some minimal knowledge in the field of modern French literature as well as a linguistic competence which is sufficient for the reading of the works that will be carried out through editions with original text accompanied by Italian translations.

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

Students will be able to meet regularly with the professor during receiving hours as well as via e-mail. Lessons will be held in Italian and the texts in French will be translated by the professor.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

From Baudelaire to Mallarmé. Modernity and obscurity in late nineteenth-century French poetry

After a series of readings and comments of poetic texts representative of the first half of the century aimed at showing the solution of continuity that, in the aesthetic field, is recorded after the symbolic date of 1848, the course will focus on the evolution of the production in verses from Baudelaire to Mallarmé. Attention will be paid in particular to the issue of "modernity" of which Baudelaire is, according to commonplace, an interpreter par excellence; the course will also focus on the issue of "darkness" which finds a culmination in the work by Mallarmé. «La modernité baudelairienne [...] - it has been noticed - porte en elle-même are contracting, resistance à la modernité »(A. Compagnon, Les cinq paradoxes de la modernité, Seuil 1990). Indeed, the author of the "Fleurs du mal" can be attributed an anti-modern spirit that appears to share some common traits, in some respects, with Flaubert, Barbey d'Aurevilly and Mallarmé, and which is to be related, in general, to the rejection of the idea of post-industrial democracy that characterizes a nineteenth-century artistic current. As we move towards the last third of the century, a similar attitude of rejection is characterized, besides the one for the choice of certain themes and descriptive modalities, also for the search for an increasingly obscure language up to the theorization of the total untranslatability of poetry in the language of social communication. This radical irreducibility of poetic language flows, especially with Mallarmé, in a theory and practice of poetic creation that establishes a paradoxical relationship between the status of existence of the real world and that of its creative transfiguration. The course objective consists in an attempt to define these characteristics of the lyric production of the period both in retrospective relation with the previous romantic poetics and in a perspective relationship with the hermetic and existential poetics of the twentieth century.
