Conoscenze

Coprire i principali aspetti del funzionamento dei sistemi di propulsione chimici a razzo e affrontare i problemi principali della loro concezione, analisi, progettazione, integrazione e uso.

Covering the main aspects of rocket propulsion systems and address the main problems of their conception, analysis, design, integration and use.

Esame dello studente consistente nella illustrazione, discussione ed applicazione degli argomenti trattati nelle lezioni.

Student examination, consisting in the illustration, discussion and application of the topics dealt with in the lectures.

The examination is intended to verify the degree of understanding of the course topics and the ability to use it to develop original solutions.

Alla fine del corso lo studente dovrà essere in grado di:

  • Formulare, discutere e risolvere problemi tecnici ed ingegneristici inerenti la concezione, il funzionamento, l'architettura, la valutazione delle prestazioni, il dimensionamento e la progettazione dei propulsori spaziali a razzo a propellenti chimici applicando le conoscenze ed i metodi illustrati nel corso.
  • Ideare e risolvere modelli originali per l'analisi e lo studio di problemi ingegneristici inerenti il programma del corso utilizzando in modo originale e creativo gli approcci illustrati nelle lezioni.
Skills

At the end of the course the student must be able to:

  • Formulate, discuss and solve technical and engineering problems concerning the conceptual definition, operation, architecture, performance evaluation, sizing and design of chemical propellant rocket engines for space applications applying the knowledge and methods illustrated in the course.
  • Devise and solve original models for the analysis and study of engineering problems related to the course program, using in an original and creative way the approaches illustrated in the lessons.

Student examination consisting in the solution (either written or on the blackboard) of one or more problems concerning the course program. The use of the material distributed by the instructor during the course is permitted, unless otherwise indicated at the assignement of the problem.

  • i corsi della laurea triennale in ingegneria aerospaziale ed in particolare quelli del corsi di Termodinamica Applicata, Fisica II, Elettronica,  Fluidodinamica e Motori per Aeromobili;
  • dei corsi di Fluids Dynamics of Propulsion Systems I e II del primo e secondo anno della laurea magistrale in ingegneria aerospaziale.

  • the courses of three-year degree in aerospace engineering and in particular those of the courses of Applied Thermodynamics, Physics II, Electronics, Fluid Dynamics and Aircraft Engines;
  • the courses of Fluids Dynamics of Propulsion Systems I and II of the first and second year of the master's degree in aerospace engineering.

 

All the topics of the three-year degree courses in aerospace engineering and in particular those of the courses of Applied Thermodynamics, Physics II and Electronics of the second year, Fluid Dynamics and Motors for Aircraft of the third year.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Introduzione

. Docente, dispense, compiti a casa e le loro soluzioni, ricevimento degli studenti, esami. Approcci alla professione e alla formazione, obiettivi educativi, consigli di studio, insegnanti e studenti, sul tuo lavoro. Il contesto internazionale di ricerca e sviluppo. Materiale di base utile, testi di riferimento. Come documentare e presentare il tuo lavoro. Alcune utili informazioni sui programmi aerospaziali (dalla "Augustine Law").

Fondamenti di propulsione di razzo. Sistemi e tecnologie di propulsione a razzo; bilancio di massa, quantità di moto ed energia; prestazioni del razzo libero; parametri di prestazione; razzi singoli e multistadio; ottimizzazione dei razzi multistadio; ottimizzazione del razzo elettrico.

Missione dello Space Shuttle. Space Shuttle System; navigazione e volo; guida, navigazione e controllo; ascesa in orbita, operazioni e manovre orbitali; rientro; atterraggio; funzioni e requisiti in orbita.

Propulsione dello Space Shuttle. Sistema di propulsione SSME: Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME), serbatoio esterno, booster a razzo solido, sottosistema di propulsione principale, sottosistema di manovra orbitale, sistema di controllo della reazione; dispositivi di combustione dello SSME, testa di potenza, accenditori, pre-bruciatori, iniettori, camera di combustione e ugello; trasferimento di calore nel SSME.

Turbomacchine spaziali. Turbopompe dello SSME, funzionamento, parametri e progetto, prestazioni di cavitazione e aspirazione; turbine, funzionamento, parametri e progetto dello SSME; requisiti del veicolo/motore; turbopompe di bassa/alta pressione dell'ossidante/combustibile; selezione, progetto, architettura, sviluppo; bilanciamento assiale; cuscinetti e guarnizioni, velocità critiche, rotodinamica; problemi di sviluppo e soluzioni.

Analisi della missione. Atmosfera, meccanica orbitale, orbite ellittiche, disturbi, manovre, trasferimenti impulsivi e a bassa spinta, lancio, ascesa in orbita, rientro in atmosfera.

Prestazioni dei razzi a propellebti chimici. Parametri caratteristici delle prestazioni; ugelli: espansione ottimale, configurazione del flusso, ugelli a campana, limiti operativi, ottimizzazione, ugelli non convenzionali; razzi a gas freddo.

Razzi a propellente solido. Architettura, generalità e classificazioni; propellenti solidi, combustione, instabilità, transitori di accensione, effetti di flusso a due fasi, trasferimento di calore, protezioni termiche.

Razzi propellenti liquidi. Architettura, generale e classificazioni; propellenti liquidi, mono-, bi- e tri-propellente, combustione, prestazioni, effetti di non equilibrio, iniezione, dimensionamento della camera di combustione, instabilità (meccanismi di iniezione e spinta), gestione e cicli del propellente, serbatoi e "sloshing" del propellente, raffreddamento rigenerativo.

Turbomacchine. Informazioni generali, tipi e architetture, equazione di Eulero, efficienze, tensioni e materiali, triangoli di velocità, parametri caratteristici, similitudine; turbopompe, induttori, compressori, turbine e turbine idrauliche. Macchine assiali: velocità del flusso, lame, forze del fluido sulle cascate del profilo, perdite; compressori: instabilità del flusso; turbine: grado di reazione, distributori bloccati, temperature di ristagno. Macchine radiali: schiere radiali, velocità di scorrimento.

Flussi 1D non stazionari in condotti instabili. Flussi comprimibili: equazioni generali, proprietà totali o di stagnazione. Flussi non stazionari in condotti: velocità sonica in condotti conformi, equazioni di continuità e di momento, flussi incomprimibili in condotti rigidi. Perdite in flussi stazionariin tubi,  espansioni improvvise, diffusori conici, ingressi e contrazioni, componenti delle tubazione. Oscillazioni di flusso di piccola ampiezza: formulazione della matrice di trasferimento dinamico per fluidi incomprimibili/comprimibili in condotti rigidi, accumulatori di pressione, valvole a farfalla, condotti dritti con/senza flusso medio e perdite.

Razzi ibridi. Generalità, velocità di regressione e sua distribuzione assiale, rapporto ossidante/combustibile, lunghezza del grano, storia della combustione, pressione della camera, spinta, effetti della temperatura del grano, radiazione termica e velocità di reazione.

Flussi bifase e cavitazione. Equazioni generali, di conservazione e costitutive, cambiamenti di fase, bollitura e cavitazione, nucleazione, dinamica delle bolle, forme di cavitazione e parametri di somiglianza, modelli di liquido/gas, liquido/gas/vapore e liquido/vapore, effetti termici, simulazione di flussi cavitanti.

Turbopompe a cavitazione. Parametri caratteristici e di similitudine, prestazioni di pompaggio e aspirazione, cavitazione termica. Instabilità indotte dalla cavitazione: classificazione e caratteristiche, cavitazione rotante, oscillazioni autoindotte, forze rotodinamiche, fluttuazioni del flusso del sistema di alimentazione, oscillazioni propulsivamente accoppiate (POGO).

Radiazione termica. Radiazioni elettromagnetiche; trasferimento di energia radiante, radiazione termica, 1a e 2a legge della radiazione di Kirchhoff, radiazione di corpo nero. Proprietà radiative dei materiali: emittenze, assorbimenti, riflettenze, trasmittenze. Reti di radiazione: radiosità e fattori di vista; cavità con superfici grigie, nere e non grigie. Radiazioni in mezzi debolmente assorbenti, assorbimento monocromatico, emissioni e trasmittenze di gas;  assorbività totale, emittenza e trasmittenza di gas multicomponenti. Lunghezze equivalente e geometriche di radiazione tra due superfici radianti, emissione omnidirezionale di un gas su una o più superfici; cavità con mezzo partecipante e superfici grigie, camera chiusa con mezzo otticamente sottile; radiazione di fiamme.

. SSME Propulsion system: Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME), external tank, solid rocket boosters, main propulsion subsystem, orbital maneuver subsystem, reaction control system; SSME combustion devices, powerhead, igniters, preburners, injectors, combustion chamber and nozzle; SSME heat transfer.



Space Shuttle Turbomachinery

. Liquid Propellant Rockets

. Architecture, general and classifications; liquid propellants, mono-, bi-and tri-propellant, combustion, performance, effects of non-equilibrium, injection, sizing of the combustion chamber, instability (injection and thrust coupling mechanisms), propellant management and cycles, tanks and propellant sloshing, regenerative cooling.



Turbomachines

. General information, types and architectures, Euler equation, efficiencies,. Stresses and materials, velocity triangles, characteristic parameters, similarity; turbopumps, inducers, compressors, turbines and hydraulic turbines. Axial machines: flow velocity, bladings, fluid forces on profile cascades, losses; compressors: flow instabilities; turbines: degree of reaction, chocked distributors, stagnation temperatures. Radial machines: radial cascades, slip velocity.



1D Unsteady Duct Flows

. Compressible flows: general equations, total or stagnation properties. Unsteady duct flows: sonic speed in compliant ducts, continuity and momentum equations, incompressible flows in rigid ducts. Steady duct flows losses in pipes, sudden expansions, conical diffusers, entrances and contractions, pipeline components. Small-amplitude flow oscillations: dynamic transfer matrix formulation for incompressible/compressible fluids in rigid ducts, pressure accumulators, throttleing valves, straight ducts with/without mean flow and losses.



Hybrid Rockets

. Generalities, speed of regression and its axial distribution, the oxidizer/fuel ratio, length of grain, combustion history, chamber pressure, thrust, grain temperature effects, thermal radiation and the speed of reaction.





Two-Phase Flows and Cavitation. 

General, conservation and constitutive equations, phase changes, boiling and cavitation, nucleation, bubble dynamics, cavitation forms and similarity parameters, patterns of liquid/gas, liquid/gas/vapor and liquid/vapor flows, thermal effects, simulation of cavitating flows.



Cavitating Turbopumps

. Characteristic and similarity parameters, pumping and suction performance, thermal cavitation. Instabilities induced by cavitation: classification and characteristics, rotating cavitation, self-induced oscillations, rotordynamic forces, flow fluctuations of the feed system, propulsively coupled oscillations (POGO).



Heat Radiation


. Electromagnetic radiation; radiant energy transfer, thermal radiation, Kirchhoff’s 1stand 2nd laws of radiation, blackbody radiation. Radiative properties of materials: emittances, absorptances, reflectances, transmittances. Radiation networks: radiosity and view factors; enclosures with gray, black and nongray surfaces. Radiation in weakly absorbing media, monochromatic absorptances, emittances and transmittances of gases; total absorptance, emittance and transmittance of multicomponent gases. Equivalent and geometric beam lengths between two radiating surfaces, omnidirectional gas emission to a single and multiple surfaces; enclosures with participating medium and gray surfaces, closed chamber with optically thin medium; radiation of flames.

Esame dello studente consistente in:

  • Illustrazione e discussione degli argomenti trattati nel corso.
  • La soluzione (scritta o sulla lavagna) di uno o più problemi relativi al programma del corso.

L'uso del materiale distribuito dal docente durante il corso è consentito, salvo diversa indicazione al momento dell'assegnazione del problema.

L'esame ha lo scopo di verificare il grado di comprensione degli argomenti del corso e la capacità di utilizzarlo per sviluppare soluzioni originali.

Assessment methods

Student examination consisting of:

  • Illustration and discussion of the topics covered in the course.
  • The solution (written or on the blackboard) of one or more problems related to the course program.

The use of the material distributed by the teacher during the course is allowed, unless otherwise specified when assigning the problem.

The exam aims to verify the degree of understanding of the course topics and the ability to use it to develop original solutions.
