Conoscenze

Knowledge

The course aims to provide knowledge about the tools and methodologies of classical philology, so that the student can become familiar with the discussion of practical critical and textual problems and deepen the philological norms learned during the degree courses, with special reference to the conjectural critique and the editorial presentation of the data.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The learning assessment will consist of an oral examination. If the number of students allows it, the last part of the course can be dedicated to seminars during which individual students will engage in in-depth analyses of specific topics or will comment parts of the text only briefly dealt with in classes.

Skills

The student will be able to interpret the critical apparatus of scholarly editions of classical texts; s/he will also acquire confidence with the most commonly used critical conventions and will be able to assess the reliability of the various approaches to editing texts in relation to the nature and modalities of text transmission.

Assessment criteria of skills

In addition to the final exam, the assessment of skills will be possible on the basis of the questions and requests of the class, who will provide opportunity for discussion at the end of each lesson. The final evaluation will take into account the degree of student participation, in addition to a possible engagement in a seminar discussion.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

Sensitivity to the more constructive aspects of philological practice. Awareness of the limits of a text reconstruction that does not take into account the major philological standards or make arbitrary use of them.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

Discussion at the end of the frontal lessons. The ability to comprehend the questions and issues of textual criticism will be assessed during the conclusive oral examination and possibly in the exposition of the seminar presentation.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

To attend the course in a profitable way the student will have to know the basic notions of philology provided by the degree courses. A solid knowledge of Greek and Latin is required.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

The importance of philological choices for the interpretation of a posthumous tragedy: Iphigenia in Aulis.

Iphigenia in Aulis was staged after the death of Euripides, together with Bacchae, in 405 a. C. or shortly after. Its text is very problematic because the revisitation of the myth - for which the sacrifice of Iphigenia suddenly turns into a voluntary gesture, chosen for the sake of the homeland. The text encompasses many formal elements that are so unusual and not very harmonized to make one think of the lack of final review of the author, and so is the intervention of an editor who would put together, not always successfully, what Euripides had left unfinished. The course intends to investigate the various philological hypotheses on the constitution of the text that has reached us, and consider the extent to which the choice of one or the other deeply affects the overall sense of the tragedy and the attempt to reconstruct the original intentions of the poet.

Non-attending students info

Students who cannot attend the course must contact the teacher. Please note that only if they have agreed personally on the integrative readings to be added to the texts in the program they will be able to sit the exam.

Modalità d'esame

Esame orale.
