Conoscenze

 Certificazioni C2

-Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE)
- IELTS Good User (punteggio 8-9)

Knowledge

The English language course includes reaching C1+/C2 of the CEF. To this end, students should
integrate their knowledge and skills attending the language classes organized by CLI (ex-lettorato) for the required level.
Passing the final test is a requirement in order to be able to have the overall mark recorded. Otherwise students can produce an international certificate, obtained no sooner than two years.

A list of accepted certificates for C2 level  follows:

-Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE)
- IELTS Good User (score: 8-9)

Language classes last throughout the year.  They are taught by Dr Wendy Doherty and will focus on all skills. Non attending (or non regularly attending) students are required to contact Dr Doherty to obtain information and/or to agree on alternative programmes. Information on these classes and the relevant tests is available at https://elearning.cli.unipi.it/mod/url/view.php?id=51 CELs (language experts) will be available to meet with students at their office,  Via S. Maria 85 (Palazzo Boilleau). For office hours see the timetable.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The final tests of language classes include a written and oral test. Since September 2015 three exam sessions are available (one in summer, one in autumn, one in winter).

Votazione esercitazioni in centesimi

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

This course is dedicated to 1) a semiotic and multimodal analysis of different text types; 2) an analysis of multimodal narrative texts, with special reference to the role of accent and dialect in characterisation.

Starting from foundations of semiotic analysis, the contribution of each channel of communication to the creation of meaning will be  analyzed, in relation to the type of communication and the recipient.

In the second part of the course we will proceed to the analysis of different case studies, with special attention to issues of linguistic variation, in literature and especially  in cinema, focusing in particular on  the representation of dialect and diastratically-marked varieties.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of a written test on the course contents  (questions on theory and text analysis). For attending students  there will be intermediate evaluation, i.e. an intermediate test on theoretical aspects and an oral presentation to evaluate analytical skills (for attenders). For non regular attenders there will be a written exam to evaluate  theoretical and analtyical skills. The mark for the final language test will also be taken into account.
