Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Translating for children, Prof.ssa S. Masi (primo semestre)

Syllabus

Translating for children, Prof.ssa S. Masi (first semester)

The course of English Language and Translation II tackles several phenomena related to the translation of texts for children, e.g. word-picture interaction, character’s names and voices in dialogues, register, regional, social and cultural connotation, wordplay, figurative and foul language, etc. In fact, the label of ‘Children’s Literature’ covers a heterogeneous target audience ranging from pre-school children, for whom picture books are written, to autonomous readers and adolescents. It will be shown that both source texts and translations reflect audience design.

The course is associated with both a Translation Laboratory (first semester) and Practical language classes (Lettorato) where both written and oral skills are practiced. These activities last throughout the year and are run by a Collaboratore ed Esperto Linguistico (CEL).

Non-attending students info

The reading list and materials are the same for both attending and non-attending students. They can be found at the University Library LM2 and at a local Photocopy shop. Also, make sure you check the relevant Moodle course for further materials and announcements.

For information about the materials of the practical language classes (lettorato), check  https://elearning.cli.unipi.it/

E' obbligatorio iscriversi preventivamente all'esame (esami.unipi.it).

Assessment methods

1) Exam with the lecturer. This consists of a written and oral part, in English, with questions on the contents of the course, text analysis from a translational perspective and/or the translation of a brief excerpt (dictionaries can be used). Online exam enrolment is compulsory (esami.unipi.it). Delayed enrolment via email is not accepted. Please specify which part(s) of the exam (written and oral or only written) you intend to take when you enrol, as this information is very important for the organisation of the exam session. The oral exam usually takes place a few days after the written part.

2) Laboratory exam (translation). The dates to sit the Laboratory exam are usually three per year (end of January, June and September). Contact the Laboratory Teacher for more information and to sign up for that part of the exam.

3) Practical language test (lettorato). The final test will follow the Cambridge exam format. A written test will include Use of English, Reading Comprehension and Text Writing, and the oral will include an Interview. During the written test, Listening-Comprehension skills will also be tested. The overall mark is 100 points, and each part is awarded 25 points.

The students who have a valid language certificate (not older than two years) are not requested to pass the instrumental language test. They are recommended to attend classes to consolidate their skills.

Students can enrol on practical language classes and check their results at the following address https://elearning.cli.unipi.it.

Students are allowed to take the exam with their lecturer even before passing the instrumental language test (but only after having completed the various parts of the exam of English Language and Translation I).

The instrumental language test will take place for the first time in June, at the end of the classes.  The various parts can be taken separately, in different sessions. A positive result is valid for two years, like international certificates. So, if a student passes the written part but not the listening, he/she can re-take the listening part while his/her written mark is saved for later. After two years, though, partial marks will no longer be saved.

There is only one mark for the exam, corresponding to the overall number of credits. The mark  for the instrumental language test (out of 100) may contribute TWO further points to the final mark.

The results of the Language test parts are valid for TWO years, while those of the Course exam with the lecturer are valid for THREE years.
