Al termine del corso, lo studente avrà acquisito competenze di base sui principi cognitivi e formali che
soggiacciono all'organizzazione e alla trasformazione dei sistemi linguistici, insieme alla capacità di
identificare le relazioni fra fenomeni linguistici apparentemente diversi e fra livelli distinti di analisi delle
lingue: fonetico e fonologico, morfologico, sintattico, semantico, pragmatico. Sarà, inoltre, consapevole della
variazione che interessa le lingue, e del rapporto tra fattori socioculturali, strutturali e neurobiologici, alla base
della loro architettura. Particolare attenzione sarà rivolta alla integrazione di prospettive e metodi diversi.
The student who successfully completes the course will have the ability to identify the relations between
different linguistic phenomena and the interactions between the different levels of linguistic analysis (e.g.,
phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics). He will be able to demonstrate a basic
altough solid knowledge of the cognitive principles underlying language organization and change. He will be
aware of language variation and change, of the interaction between sociocultural factors and neurobiologically
dependent factors in language, and of the need for integrating various approach to the study of language.

The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents
using the appropriate terminology. He must be able to demonstrate his/her knowledge of the course
material and to discuss the reading matter thoughtfully and with propriety of expression. Final exam.
Al termine del corso, lo studente avrà acquisito la conoscenza di base degli strumenti e dei metodi
di ricerca nel campo della linguistica, fondati sulla consapevolezza che la lingua è un sistema al confine
fra natura e cultura.
The students will acquire basic knowledge and basic research tools and metods for linguistic investigations, based on the observation that language corresponds to a system at the boundary between nature and nurture.

Nozioni di semantica verbale.
I sistemi di codifica argomentale nelle lingue del mondo.
Distinzioni linguistiche e loro correlati neurali. Il contributo delle neuroscienze allo studio della lingua come
sistema cognitivo.
Language as cognitive system: its organization and change. Foundations of linguistic theory: the description
of language as symbolic system; language organization: phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax,
semantics, pragmatics. Language change. Linguistic categorization: discrete and graded categories. Notions
of verbal semantics: the four basic verb classes and their reflexes in morphosyntax. Argument coding systems
in the languages of the world. Linguistic distinctions and their neural correlates. The contribution of cognitive
