Conoscenze

At the end of this course the student will be able to:
- critically review, discuss and analyse concepts and principles of sustainable development and ecological economics.
- know some stylized facts of international development specifically on the relationship between environment and development
- be aware of the main links between human wellbeing and environmental degradation
- discuss policies for social and sustainable development.

Sustainable development (SD) is a concept that has several interpretations and sometimes is used too vaguely. Starting from the Brundtland Report, the course provides students with the tools to understand and critically assess the multifaceted concept of sustainable development and the links between human wellbeing and environmental degradation. Students learn about the current state of (un)sustainability and how to measure it, and the efforts that the UN is doing with the SDGs.
The course gives then an overview of the policies for implementing sustainable development and introduces to the debates about the cost and benefits of promoting SD.
