Lo studente dovrà acquisire conoscenze in merito agli strumenti e alle metodologie di analisi del testo letterario unitamente a conoscenze di ordine storico-letterario e, più latamente, di ordine culturale moderno. E ciò in particolare relativamente al contesto francese settecentesco
The student will have to acquire knowledge about the tools and methods of analysis of the literary text together with knowledge of a historical-literary order and, more latently, of a modern cultural order. And this in particular with regard to the eighteenth-century French context
La verifica delle conoscenze avverrà attraverso la valutazione di un elaborato scritto previsto per la fine del corso, nonché attraverso una discussione orale dello stesso.
The verification of the knowledge will take place through the evaluation of a written paper planned for the end of the course, as well as through an oral discussion of the same.
Al termine del corso lo studente sarà in grado di analizzare un testo letterario collocandolo nel proprio contesto storico e ideologico, di estrapolare correttamente dal testo elementi tematici senza stravolgerne il senso, di presentare in una relazione scritta i risultati di un'analisi di testo svolta secondo le modalità illustrate nel corso.
At the end of the course the student will be able to analyze a literary text placing it in its historical and ideological context, to correctly extract from the text thematic elements without distorting their meaning, to present in a written report the results of a text analysis carried out according to the methods illustrated in the course.

The student must prepare and demonstrate to know how to discuss a written report on a literary text using the tools provided during the course.

Rousseau o il disagio della civiltà
Pubblicati a un anno di distanza l’uno dall’altro, La Nouvelle Héloïse (1761) e l’Émile (1762) di Rousseau costituiscono due fra i maggiori testi del Settecento europeo nei quali si trovano riunite istanze letterarie, morali e filosofiche di portata epocale. Entrambe le opere sono definibili come un grande laboratorio intellettuale dove i temi dei rapporti fra le classi, tra i sessi e tra le generazioni vengono posti in maniera assolutamente nuova annunciando, per molti aspetti, gli sconvolgimenti sociali e culturali della rivoluzione politica e della rivoluzione industriale che avrebbero di lì a poco interessato la Francia e l’Europa intera. Attraverso la vicenda romanzesca di un amore votato alla rinuncia nel caso della Nouvelle Héloïse, o attraverso la storia dell’evoluzione formativa di un giovane sotto la guida del suo educatore nel caso dell’Émile, l’autore affronta una serie di questioni decisive che interrogano il passaggio dall’ancien régime alla nuova forma di società definita dal capitalismo industriale nascente. Più precisamente, grazie alla costruzione di inediti modelli delle relazioni erotico-famigliari e delle relazioni di trasmissione generazionale del sapere, ne va del rovesciamento di un assetto millenario dei rapporti tra natura e civiltà – rovesciamento con il quale, com’è noto, Rousseau si situa all’origine di tutta una serie di motivi nodali del pensiero moderno. Al contempo le due opere si rivelano estremamente interessanti dal punto di vista formale, in quanto presentano il problema della compresenza tra forma letteraria e forma ideologica. Il corso si propone di studiare i due testi di Rousseau indagando e mettendone a confronto i temi maggiori secondo il metodo della scomposizione paradigmatica (avvalendosi anche di una serie di riferimenti al contesto storico-letterario e alla figura dell’autore), nonché di approfondire da un punto di vista teorico la questione della sovrapposizione tra discorso romanzesco e discorso saggistico – questione retorica capitale ai fini di qualunque tentativo non tautologico di definizione dello statuto della letteratura. Oltre a questa parte monografica, il programma d’esame prevede una parte generale costituita dall’introduzione alla produzione letteraria del Settecento francese. La preparazione di questa parte comporta la lettura di alcuni testi classici, scelti tra quelli indicati, accompagnata dalla preparazione di una serie lavori critici ad essi dedicati.
Rousseau or the Uneasiness in Civilization
Published within a year of each other, Rousseau's La Nouvelle Héloïse (1761) and Émile (1762) constitute two of the major texts of the European 18th Century in which epochal literary, moral and philosophical issues are assembled. Both works can be defined as large intellectual laboratories where the themes of the relation between classes, sexes and generations are posed in an absolutely innovative manner; heralding, in many respects, the social and cultural upheavals of the political and industrial revolution which would shortly interest France and the rest of Europe. Through the romance of a love marked by renunciation in the case of the Nouvelle Héloise, or through the formative evolution of a young man under the guidance of his educator in the case of the Émile, the author faces a series of crucial issues that question the transition from the ancien régime to the new form of society defined by nascent industrial capitalism. More precisely, Rousseau invents unprecedented models of erotic and familiar relations and new modalities of transmitting knowledge from one generation to the next. Thanks to the construction of these new paradigms, the writer was able to reverse a millennial framework of relationships between Nature and Culture, and he became a crucial figure in the rise of modern thought inaugurating all its tendencies and resonances. At the same time the two works are extremely interesting from a formal point of view, as they address the problem of the coexistence between literary and ideological discourses. The course aims not only at studying Émile and La Nouvelle Héloïse by investigating and comparing their major themes according to the method of paradigmatic factorization (also making use of a series of references to the historical-literary context and the figure of the author); but also at pursuing the matter of the overlap between romance and essayistic discourses from a theoretical point of view – a capital rhetorical point for any non-tautological attempt to define the statute of literature. In addition to this monographic part, the course includes a general part consisting in a wide-ranging introduction to the literature of the French 18th Century. The preparation for this part includes the reading of some classic novels, chosen from those indicated, accompanied by the study of a series of critical works dedicated to them.

La frequenza è vivamente consigliata e l'impossibilità di frequentare le lezioni deve essere motivata. Per gli studenti non frequentanti il programma d'esame resta il medesimo, ma essi dovranno dimostrare di avere preparato in maniera approfondita 5 (anziché 3) studi fra quelli a scelta indicati nella bibbliografia della parte monografica, nonché 2 (anziché 1) romanzi, racconti o dialoghi filosofici, testi teatrali (accompagnati dalle relative letture critiche) fra quelli a scelta indicati nella bibbliografia della parte generale. Eventuali modificazioni del programma e del carico bibbiografico potranno essere concordate con il docente durante l'orario di ricevimento.
Attendance is highly recommended and the inability to attend classes must be justified. For non-attending students, the exam program remains the same, but they will have to demonstrate that they have thoroughly prepared 5 (instead of 3) studies among those chosen in the bibbliography of the monographic part, as well as 2 (instead of 1) novels, short stories o philosophical dialogues, theatrical texts (accompanied by the relative critical readings) among those indicated in the bibliography of the general part. Any changes to the program and the bibbiographical load can be agreed with the teacher during office hours.
L'esame prevede un primo momento consistente nella redazione di un elaborato scritto su un argomento attinente ai contenuti del corso concordato con il docente, e un secondo momento costituito dalla discussione orale della relazione stessa, con riferimenti puntuali e generali ai contenuti del corso e ai testi scelti in bibliografia. Agli studenti, inoltre, potranno venire richiesti commenti e traduzioni delle fonti primarie oggetto delle lezioni nonché nozioni di storia letteraria del Settecento francese.
The exam includes a first phase consisting in the preparation of a written paper on a topic relevant to the contents of the course agreed with the teacher, and a second phase consisting of the oral discussion of the report itself, with specific and general references to the course contents and texts chosen in the bibliography. Furthermore, students may be asked for comments and translations of the primary sources covered by the lectures as well as notions of French 18th century literary history.
