Conoscenze

Knowledge

The Course is addressed to students on the LINGUISTICS curriculum and presupposes a C1 level of proficiency in English and aims to raise it to a C1+ through the study of implicitness and figurative language. At the end of the Course, students are expected to master the strategies of implicit and non literal communication and to be aware of the inferential dynamics of figurative language understanding with specific focus on irony, sarcasm and satire. Students will be able to identify the linguistic markers of irony, to assess the satirical quality of texts, to identify the targets of irony, sarcams and satire and to discuss the social functions of implicitness and irony, sarcasm and satire. In addition, students will be able to apply the main categories of theoretical analysis to the texts under consideration.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Students will be asked to prepare reports and class presentations of the essays that will be read and analysed during the course

Skills

Students will be asked to apply the main pragmatic and cognitivist theories to the analysis of implicit meanings with specific reference to ironic and satirical texts, and will learn the specialized lexis and analytical categories required for the analysis.

Assessment criteria of skills

Students will be asked to analyse both written and audio- visual texts and to prepare presentations

Comportamenti

Behaviors

Students will acquire and/or develop an awareness of the most important aspects of implicitness and the capability to assess the degree of explicitness/implicitness of a text, along with the capability of deriving meanings from the observed data.

Modalità di verifica dei comportamenti

Presentazioni di ppt e reports alla classe

Assessment criteria of behaviors

Students will be asked to prepare ppt presentations and reports of papers.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

A C1 level of English is required. To this end, two Lettorati Courses will be devoted to improve the written and oral skills (information on Moodle CLI). At the end of the Language practice course (two semesters), students will sit written and oral tests. The results will contribute to the finale grade.
As an alternative, students may get a C1 international certificate not older than two years.

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

The Course will be offered in the first semester and will be offered mostly in English . Depending on the number of the students who will attend the Course, the classes may take the form of seminars with in itinere assessment.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

TITOLO DEL CORSO: IMPLICITNESS IN TEXT AND DISCOURSE

Implicitness is at one time an intrinsic feature of verbal language and a powerful instrument of communication. Inferential pragmatics, as started by Grice, has established in the literature as the most powerful apparatus for the treatment of the communicative side of implicitness. “Mature” theories of semiotics, on the other hand, have long pointed out that the link between what is said and what is meant can only be grasped inferentially, and have accordingly provided the general paradigm for the development of theories of meaning as dynamic, negotiable entities . In the Course, the following and other fundamental questions will be (explicitly or implicitly) addressed:
1. With respect to what can we say that a linguistic expression is more or less explicit?
2. What are the instruments of implicitness ? Along a quantitative parameter, implicitness is certainly linked to reduction, omission, synthesis, while explicitness to expansion, insertion, implementation, addition. But implicit meanings are also conveyed by other means, such as vagueness, indefiniteness, generalizations, ambiguities and, in general, by qualitative rather than quantitative manipulations of linguistic structures.
3. What are the cognitive operations that must be performed in order to recover an implicit message? What kind of inferences and what theories of reasoning are able to account for the recovery of different types of implicit meanings?
4. What kind of information is needed for inferential processes to work out plausible hypotheses on the implicit import of an utterance? Is previous knowledge a sufficient source ?
5. What are the limits of implicitness and What are the effects of implicitness in text/discourse understanding?
The Course will be focused on ironic and satirical texts as specific forms of implicit communication.
