Al termine del corso lo studente potrà acquisire conoscenze rispetto
- alle varie fasi e ai vari strati della lingua latina dai primi testi scritti fino alla tarda antichità tramite la lettura di alcuni testi particolarmente significativi e
- agli strumenti e alle metodologie per una esegesi dei testi latini particolarmente attenta ai loro aspetti linguistici.
At the end of the course the student will be able to acquire knowledge
- of the various phases and layers of the Latin language from the first written texts up to late antiquity through the reading of some particularly significant texts and
- of the tools and methodologies for a linguistic analysis of Latin texts.
Le conoscenze saranno valutate in un colloquio orale che prenderà le mosse dall’analisi di brani tratti dai testi in programma.
Knowledge will be assessed in an oral interview that will start from the analysis of excerpts from the texts of the syllabus.
Al termine del corso lo studente sarà in grado di affinare la propria sensibilità nel riconoscere le principali caratteristiche di un testo latino dal punto di visto storico-linguistico e stilistico.
At the end of the course the student will be able to refine his/her sensitivity in recognizing the main characteristics of a Latin text from the historical-linguistic and stylistic point of view.
Le capacità saranno valutate sia in base a eventuali contributi e interventi dello studente durante le lezioni, sia nell’ambito del colloquio orale (che anche in questo caso prenderà le mosse dall’analisi di brani tratti dai testi in programma).
Skills will be assessed both on the basis of any contributions and interventions of the student during the lessons, and in the context of the oral examination (which also in this case will start from the analysis of passages from the texts of the syllabus).
Il corso si propone di sollecitare la partecipazione attiva degli studenti e di incoraggiare loro personali proposte interpretative dei testi letti a lezione: per questa ragione la partecipazione alle lezioni è vivamente raccomandata.
The course aims to solicit the active participation of students and to encourage their personal interpretative proposals of the texts read in class: for this reason, attendance in this course is not mandatory but is highly recommended.
I comportamenti saranno valutati sia in base a eventuali contributi e interventi dello studente durante le lezioni, sia nell’ambito del colloquio orale che anche in questo caso prenderà le mosse dall’analisi di brani tratti dai testi in programma.
The behaviors will be evaluated both on the basis of any contributions and interventions of the student during the lessons, and in the context of the oral exam which also in this case will start from the analysis of pieces taken from the texts in the syllabus.
Una buona conoscenza della grammatica normativa della lingua latina.
A good knowledge of the standard grammar of the Latin language.
Il corso prevede lezioni frontali che tuttavia presuppongono e sollecitano il più possibile la partecipazione attiva degli studenti.
The course includes face-to-face lectures which, however, presuppose and solicit the active participation of students as much as possible.
Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)
1) il latino di epoca arcaica.
Durante il corso verranno letti brani particolarmente significativi a illustrazione delle caratteristiche del latino di epoca arcaica.
2) Oltre ai testi analizzati a lezione, gli studenti leggeranno autonomamente anche
- un manuale di storia della lingua latina
nonché i seguenti testi in lingua originale:
- Petronio, Cena Trimalchionis (Satyrica 27-78)
- i testi 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 17, 19, 22, 27, 29, 31, 39, 43 commentati nella recente antologia di J. N. Adams, An Anthology of Informal Latin, 200 BC – AD 900, Cambridge 2016.
1) archaic Latin.
Particularly significant passages will be read during the course to illustrate the features of archaic Latin.
2) In addition to the texts analyzed in class, students will also read independently
- a manual of the history of the Latin language
as well as the following texts in the original language:
- Petronius, Cena Trimalchionis (Satyrica 27-78)
- texts n. 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 17, 19, 22, 27, 29, 31, 39, 43 in the recent anthology by JN Adams, An Anthology of Informal Latin, 200 BC - AD 900, Cambridge 2016.
Per i testi del corso la bibliografia verrà di volta in volta indicata a lezione.
Per la parte d’esame da preparare autonomamente la bibliografia è la seguente:
- per il manuale di storia della lingua latina: Stolz, Debrunner, W. A. Schmid, Storia della lingua latina (4. ed. riveduta e aggiornata ed., Testi e manuali per l'insegnamento universitario del latino 3). Bologna: Pàtron 1993 (ma vivamente consigliato, in alternativa a questo manuale, è J. Clackson (ed.), A Companion to the Latin Language, Wiley-Blackwell, 2011, pp. 7-283).
- per la Cena Trimalchionis di Petronio: Gian Franco Gianotti, La cena di Trimalchione: dal «Satyricon» di Petronio, Acireale: Bonanno, 2013.
- per i brani antologizzati e commentati da Adams: J. N. Adams, An Anthology of Informal Latin, 200 BC – AD 900, Cambridge 2016.
For the texts of the course the bibliography will be indicated from time to time in class.
For the part of the exam to be prepared independently, the bibliography is as follows:

Gli studenti non frequentanti sostituiranno la parte del programma relativa al corso con lo studio dei brani commentati in E. Courtney, Archaic Latin Prose, Scholar Press, Atlanta, Georgia 1999.
Non-attending students will replace the part of the program relating to the course with the study of the commented pieces in E. Courtney, Archaic Latin Prose, Scholar Press, Atlanta, Georgia 1999.
La prova orale consiste in un colloquio che prende le mosse dalla lettura in lingua originale di uno dei testi in programma sulla base del quale il candidato dovrà dimostrare innanzitutto la capacità di leggere l’originale latino con la corretta accentazione, di saperne individuare le strutture grammaticali e sintattiche, di fornirne una corretta traduzione italiana; inoltre il candidato dovrà dimostrare di saper inserire i vari fenomeni linguistici presenti in quel testo in un più complessivo quadro della storia della lingua latina.
La prova orale non è superata se il candidato mostra di non essere in grado di esprimersi in modo chiaro e di usare la terminologia corretta, oppure se il candidato mostra di non essere in grado di tradurre correttamente i testi in programma o di non conoscere gli elementi basilari della lingua latina (con particolare riferimento alla fonetica e alla morfologia) e della sua storia.
The oral exam consists of an interview that starts from the reading in the original language of one of the syllabus texts on the basis of which the candidate must first demonstrate the ability to read the original Latin with the correct accentuation, to know how to identify the grammatical structures and syntactic, to provide a correct Italian translation; furthermore, the candidate must demonstrate that he is able to insert the various linguistic phenomena present in that text into a more comprehensive picture of the history of the Latin language.
The oral exam is not passed if the candidate shows he is unable to express himself clearly and to use the correct terminology, or if the candidate shows that he is unable to translate syllabus texts correctly or does not know the basic elements of the Latin language (with particular reference to phonetics and morphology) and of its history.

martedì e mercoledì, ore 12-13.30, aula Ricci 4
