Conoscenze

Knowledge

By the end of the course the student will have acquired a good knowledge of the Old Armenian and will have meditated on the linguistic and cultural aspects discussed in class.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Given the reduced number of students, the verification of knowledge will already take place during the lessons, from time to time.

Skills

The student will now be able to translate and understand a text written in Old Armenian, regardless of the time of its compilation.

Assessment criteria of skills

Given the reduced number of students, this verification will already take place in class.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

Students will meditate on the intertwining and mutual conditioning of language, society and history, a situation exemplified here for the Armenian world, but valid for any age and culture.

In addition, students will meditate on writing and falsification of history, and on the idea of national identity.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

Given the reduced number of students, this verification will already take place in class.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

Being able to read a text written in Armenian and orient himself/herself in the basic grammatical structures of the ancient language.

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

The course consists of a series of lectures, but students can be asked to prepare in advance the translation of some of the passages that will then be discussed and commented.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Il corso sarà diviso in due parti:

Syllabus

The course will be divided into two parts:

1. A brief history of the Armenian language.

The module aims to draw a historical profile of the Armenian language, from the oldest evidence to date.

The presentation will be accompanied by the commented reading of original texts.

2. Presentation and translation of some parts of Patmowt'iwn Hayoc' ("History of the Armenians") allegedly written by one Agat'angełos. This text mainly deals with the Christianisation of Armenia, in the 4th century, also offering a description of 4th-century Armenian society, which by and large is also valid for the following century, when the "History" was written.
