Conoscenze

Knowledge

The second-year English language course is articulated into two components: the theoretical course (Corso Docente) and practical language usage classes (ex-Lettorato).

Course: The course aims to provide knowledge of the characteristics of the English language on the syntactic, structural, and textual levels, with particular reference to various discourse domains and communicative situations.

Language Classes: The course requires students to reach the B2+ of the European Framework. Towards this objective, as part of their individual work students can/will attend practical language classes (ex-Lettorato) organized by CLI for the Department for the indicated level.

- Cambridge FCE (Grade B o A) o certificato superiore
- IELTS: punteggio 6.0 o superiore
- Toefl IBT: punteggio 80 o superiore

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Course: Written exam with multiple choice questions, open response questions and a text analysis exercise.

Syllabus

The second-year English course is entitled "From phrases to texts to discourse" and takes place during the first semester. It introduces the features of English syntax, with particular attention to formal, functional, and phraseological aspects. It also includes features of English texts, focusing on topics such as cohesion and coherence, text types, interpersonal and rhetorical elements of texts, as well as characteristics of texts used in special communicative situations such as journalism, advertising, intercultural communication, business communication and social media.

Language Classes are taught by language instructors (dott.sse Fowler/last names A-F, Lynam/last names G-P and Ristevski/last names Q-Z) and span over the first and the second semesters, aiming to develop language skills for the four language abilities: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Modalità d'esame

(1) Corso Docente:

- Cambridge FCE (Grade B o A) o certificato superiore
- IELTS: punteggio 6.0 o superiore
- Toefl IBT: punteggio 80 o superiore

(3) Lingua Strumentale (ex-Lettorato) - Livello Avanzato:

Assessment methods

(1) Course:

Assessment will consist of a written exam with multiple choice questions, open response questions and text analysis exercises.

In case distance assessment is necessary, there will be a written exam followed by an oral exam to be completed in the same appello. The content of both the written and the oral exams will be based on the topics covered in the course. The written exam with various types of closed questions will be administered on Moodle. A passing mark on the written exam is a prerequisite to sit for the oral exam. The mark will be assigned after passing the oral exam. Students who are already able to demonstrate an adequate level of speaking competence (B2+) may sit for the course exam in January, February, or April. Other students should wait until they have passed the speaking component of the lettorato tests before sitting for the course exam.

N.B. Possible changes to the assessment format will be notified during the course of the year.

During the course, mock written exam questions will be proposed. The final result of the complete course assessment is valid for THREE years.

(2) Language Classes:
Assessment follows the Cambridge exam format, with tests to verify skills of reading comprehension/use of English, writing, listening comprehension, and speaking, for a total of 100 points. Each skill contributes 25 points to the total, with a minimum passing score of 15 points. Further information about how the tests will be administered will be available on https://elearning.cli.unipi.it.

The tests - written (reading/use of English and writing), listening, and oral -  can be taken separately. For example, if a student passes the written (reading/use of English and writing), but not the listening, s/he can take the only listening again and maintain the passing score on the written test. However, to sit for the oral test, it is first necessary to pass the both written and the listening tests. After two years, any partial results are no longer valid and the tests must be repeated. All results are valid for two years (as for the officially recognized certificates - see below). Students can enroll for the tests and see their results at  https://elearning.cli.unipi.it.

Students who possess a valid form of certification at a B2+ level are not required to pass the Practical Languages tests. Certificates that are recognized can be found at http://www.cli.unipi.it/corsi/certificazioni-internazionali-1/certificazioni-internazionali, which include:
- Cambridge FCE (Grade B o A) or higher certificate
- IELTS: score of 6.0 or higher
- Toefl IBT: score of 80 or higher

Students who already possess one of these certificates should still attend the Language Classes to maintain and consolidate their acquired level of English language competence.
N.B. Certificates can be used to substitute only one year of the Language Classes.

3) Advanced Language Classes:

The advanced classes are only for second-year students who have passed the Advanced Level first-year Language Classes in 2020 with a score of at least 85/100, or who possess a valid certificate at a B2+ level (minimum FCE Grade B). Students will independently view ten films in original English and will attend one class per week with Dr. Fowler (group A-L) or Dr. Ristevski (group M-Z) to discuss and carry out language tasks related to the previously viewed films. At the end, there will be a written test and an oral assessment. Further details will be available on the Lingua Inglese II course Moodle site at the beginning of the semester.

The final mark for whole course is assigned by the Prof. Crawford after all parts have been completed. The overall score attained on the language class tests (out of a total of 100) may contribute up to two additional points to the final mark of the course.
