Syllabus

The first part of the course offers an introduction in the linguistic study of texts applied to the Romanian language, from a perspective which integrates concepts specific to the discourse analysis, stylistics and rhetoric.

By the end of the study program, the students will be able to understand and manage the mechanisms of text study and to apply the acquired knowledge in text analysis. The focus will be on the particularities of functional styles in texts to be examined at first sight, with the purpose of identifying the distinctive features of oral communication (elements of the common and colloquial registers in audio-visual productions), and also the typological characteristics of scientific language, and the specific elements of the scientific style.

The practical aspect of the course will consist of elaborating documents belonging to the official style (for example, a request, a contract, a text of law, a decree, an ordinance, etc.). Furthermore, the Romanian course will facilitate the comprehension and the production of other various typologies of texts (pieces of news, advertisements, both in writing and orally), in order to allow the examination of constituent, lexical and rhetoric characteristics of every type of text.

Besides, the main elements that define the language of literary fiction will be presented in the context of an in-depth study of the literary genres, of the rhetorical figures and of the construction particularities that distinguish this style. Finally, the rhetorical and stylistic particularities of the language of advertisement will be studied.

The second part of the course will be dedicated to word (vocabulary) formation in contemporary Romanian and to the study of the modalities which define the formation and enrichment of the vocabulary. Among these, the derivation with prefixes and suffixes (from a historical and a contemporary perspective), the methods of forming compound words, the dynamics of denotative and connotative meanings, the abbreviations in contemporary Romanian, with special attention to logos, acronyms and truncation, as well as calques and loans will be addressed. This part of the course is aimed at illustrating the description of the contemporary Romanian vocabulary through influences and creativity.

The linguistic study will be correlated with exercises aimed at developing the instrumental use of the language, with the purpose of reaching the B1 level, according to the European Framework. That is, the following elements will be studied from the morphological point of view: the possessive article, the reflexive pronoun in the Accusative and in the Dative cases, the verb in the present and past tenses of the conditional mood.

The course includes the Language practice – it. Lettorato, a learning program which aims at developing the instrumental use of the language and which proposes practical exercises that activate the fundamental structures of Romanian, and which allow students to handle communicative interactions in various situational contexts, especially in personal, educational, and public interaction situations.

Non-attending students info

The thematic program of the course will include the same topics proposed to attending students. There are no variations for non-attending students regarding the bibliography and the examination method.

Assessment methods

The final examination aims to test theoretical and practical topics, acquired both during the lessons of the course and the language practice (“Lettorato”), which will be submitted to students during a written test. This test will be supplemented by a further oral test which will be held also on the day of the exam. The two tests evaluate both the theoretical contents of the course and the practical, linguistic and communicative skills and competences, written and oral, acquired during the language practice of the “Lettorato”.

During the final oral examination students will have the opportunity to understand and acquire an in depth knowledge of the correct resolution of each single question that has been submitted to them, as well as to provide further answers and additions concerning the contents presented during the course and the lessons with mother-tongue teachers, directly linked to the topics and the exercises that made up the exam.

During the lessons, students will have the opportunity to answer specific questions, to express their points of view and to bring out their knowledge interests with respect to the topics that will be the subject of the course.

The final grade is calculated out of thirty and is determined by the results obtained in the exam which test the (curricular) course and the Lettorato tests. The minimum passing mark is 18/30 (60%). Marks in the 60-70% range (18-21/30) correspond to a A2 level (C); marks in the 71%-85% range (22-26/30) correspond to a A2 level (B); marks in the 86%-100% range (27-30) correspond to a A2  level (A).
