La formazione di una nuova struttura: l’Occidente postromano dal IV al IX secolo.
Da sempre al centro della riflessione storiografica europea, il passaggio dalla età tardoromana all’alto medioevo in Occidente è stato ed è ancora oggi uno dei campi di studio tra i più vivaci e più produttivi della ricerca internazionale degli ultimi decenni. Il corso presenterà e discuterà alcune delle principali sintesi recenti, i loro paradigmi interpretativi e le questioni di maggiore interesse ancora aperte: nella storia demografica e delle strutture insediative, agrarie e degli scambi.
Alla fine del corso gli studenti avranno migliorato la loro conoscenza dei principali cambiamenti che determinarono la formazione di una nuova struttura economica e sociale, insieme alla capacità di orientarsi nel dibattito storiografico e nel panorama delle fonti di maggiore importanza nella discussione.
The formation of a new structure: the post-Roman West from the 4th to the 9th century.
Always at the center of European historiographical reflection, the transition from the late Roman age to the early Middle Ages in the West was and still is one of the liveliest and most productive fields of study of international research in recent decades. The course will present and discuss some of the main recent syntheses, their interpretative paradigms and the questions of greatest interest still open: in the history of demographics and settlement, agricultural and trade structures.
At the end of the course the students will have improved their knowledge of the main changes that determined the formation of a new economic and social structure, together with the ability to orient themselves in the historiographical debate and in the panorama of the sources of greater importance in the discussion.

Attraverso la prova orale sulle letture concordate, gli studenti dovranno dimostrare di avere acquisito la capacità di comprendere, interpretare ed esporre criticamente i risultati di una letteratura storiografica complessa, i documenti e i testi presentati e discussi durante il corso e quelli oggetto della eventuale esercitazione seminariale.
Through the oral exam on the agreed readings, students will have to demonstrate: a) that they have acquired a sure knowledge of the history of social structures and of the processes of economic and institutional transformation between the 4th and 9th centuries; b) to have acquired the ability to understand, interpret and critically expose the results of a complex historiographical literature, the documents and texts presented and discussed during the course and those subject of the eventual seminar exercise.
E' presupposta la conoscenza della storia generale dell'età medievale. E' molto utile la conoscenza di e almeno una lingua straniera tra quelle in uso nella discussione scientifica internazionale.

Le lezioni del corso illustreranno il tema attraverso la ricostruzione del dibattito storiografico, la presentazione di alcune fonti e di contributi di ricerca significativi, l'analisi di questioni fondamentali della ricerca corrente. Gli studenti frequentanti saranno invitati a partecipare attivamente alla discussione. In relazione al numero di iscritti e alle condizioni di accesso alle biblioteche, potranno anche intervenire con loro eventuali esercitazioni seminariali sulla bibliografia e i materiali presentati durante le lezioni.
The lessons will illustrate the theme through the reconstruction of the historiographical debate, the presentation of some significant contributions, the analysis of the fundamental issues in current research. Attending students will be invited to actively participate in the discussion. In relation to the number of members and the conditions of access to libraries, students will be able to participate with any seminar exercises on the bibliography and on the materials presented during the course.
Il primo testo di riferimento è C. Wickham, Le società dell’alto medioevo, Roma, Viella, 2009 (ed. orig.: Oxford, 2005), ma il corso sarà incentrato sulla recezione e sulla letteratura scientifica posteriore, sulla base di una bibliografia che sarà distribuita e commentata a lezione.
Materiali e bibliografia saranno per quanto possibile resi disponibili su Moodle durante le lezioni
The first reference text is C. Wickham, Framing the Early Middle Ages, Oxford 2005 (ital. transl.: Rome 2009) but the course will focus on reception and later scientific literature, on the basis of a bibliography that will be distributed and commented on in class.
Materials and bibliography will be made available on Moodle as far as possible during the lessons.

Sulla base della situazione sanitaria e del numero degli studenti iscritti e interessati, i frequentanti potranno sostenere parte rilevante dell'esame attraverso la preparazione di un seminario, discusso in aula (fisica o virtuale) e accompagnato da una relazione scritta.
Final oral exam on the agreed individual program. Depending on the health situation and the number of enrolled and interested students, attending students will be able to take a significant part of the exam through the preparation of a seminar, discussed in the classroom (even virtual) and accompanied by a written report.
