Il corso offre un approccio alla storia sociale bizantina, concentrandosi su una questione centrale nel dibattito storiografico: la definizione dello status aristocratico e della potenza sociale a Bisanzio. Ci interrogheremo sulla composizione delle élites dell'impero e sul loro comportamento sociale, politico e culturale. Questi temi saranno affrontati attraverso la discussione delle tesi storiografiche tradizionali, e tramite l'analisi di fonti letterarie e non letterarie (in traduzione italiana e con testo originale a fronte). Pur tenendo conto delle evoluzioni della società bizantina nel lungo periodo che va dalla tarda antichità alla caduta di Costantinopoli (1453), il corso si concentrerà in particolare sul periodo mediobizantino (VIII-XII sec.).
The course offers an introduction to Byzantine social history by focusing on a cluster of issues which are at the core of historiographical debates: the definition of aristocratic status in Byzantium, the composition of the Empire's élite, and the latter's social, political and cultural behavior. To address these questions, we will discuss traditional historiographical interpretations and scholarly literature, while also analysing a selection of literary and non-literary sources (in Italian translation with parallel text in Greek). While tracing the general evolution of Byzantine society between the end of Antiquity and the fall of Constantinople (1453), the course will particularly focus on the middle Byzantine period (VIII-XII c.)

Alla fine del corso gli studenti avranno una solida conoscenza delle strutture e gerarchie sociali proprie dell'impero bizantino e delle loro evoluzioni, con particolare attenzione al periodo mediobizantino (VIII-XII sec.). Avranno acquisito familiarità con alcune nozioni di base della ricerca prosopografica e con le tecniche di interpretazione di diverse fonti letterarie e documentarie.
By the end of the course, students will have a good knowledge of the structures and social hierarchies of the Byzantine Empire and their evolutions over time, with a particular focus on the middle Byzantine period (VIII-XII centuries). Students will become familiar with the basic notions of prosopographical research and with the interpretation techniques of various literary and documentary sources.

In class, the acquisition of desired skills will be assessed through the interaction with the teacher and fellow students.
During the examination, the student's ability to build a clear argument by using sources and secondary literature will be evaluated.

The knowledge of ancient Greek may be useful but it is not mandatory.

Il corso si articolerà in due parti:
A) Parte generale (8 ore): lineamenti di storia evenemenziale e istituzionale dell'impero bizantino.
B) Parte monografica (28 ore): Potenza economica e potenza sociale a Bisanzio (VIII-XII sec.).
- Nobiltà, aristocrazia, élites: la definizione del ceto dirigente a Bisanzio come problema storiografico.
- I fondamenti dello status aristocratico: la famiglia e il nome; il servizio imperiale; la fortuna economica.
- L'esercizio del potere: influenza sociale e violenza; le ambizioni politiche delle élites; le gerarchie ecclesiastiche fra autorità spirituale e potenza materiale.
- Ideologia e cultura aristocratica: letteratura familiare; la santità aristocratica; fondatori e donatori.
The course will be divided into two parts
A) General introduction (8 hours): the Byzantine Empire, events and institutions.
B) Monographic course (28 hours): Economic and social power in Byzantium (VIII-XII c.)
- Nobility, aristocracy, elites: defining the ruling class in Byzantium.
- The sources of aristocratic status: family and name; imperial service; wealth.
- The exercise of power: social influence and violence; the elite's political ambitions; the ecclesiastical hierarchies between spiritual authority and material power.
- Aristocratic ideology and culture: family literature; aristocratic sanctity; founders and donors.
