Obiettivi di apprendimento
Learning outcomes
Conoscenze

Lo/La studente/ssa potrà acquisire  conoscenze sulla storia dell'Archeologia subacquea, le caratteristiche della navigazione e del commercio antico; nozioni di biologia marina  e le metodologie e tecniche di prospezione e scavo subacquei.

Knowledge

Students will be able to acquire knowledge about marine biology and the history of Underwater Archaeology, the characteristics of navigation and ancient trade, methodologies and techniques of underwater surveys and excavations.

Per l'accertamento delle conoscenze saranno svolte continue attività di interazione con gli studenti nel corso delle lezioni.

Continuous interaction with the students during the lessons will ascertain their state of knowledge

Capacità

Lo/La studente/ssa acquisirà capacità nel riconoscimento delle diverse tipologie delle imbarcazioni antiche, da guerra e commerciale, sulle tecniche di costruzione navale, sulle modalità della navigazione antica, e del commercio antico. Acquisirà la conoscenza delle metodologie e degli strumenti per la prospezione e scavo subacquei. In particolare acquisirà capacità nella classificazione del vasellame ed anfore a circolazione mediterranea con cronologia III sec. a.C.-VII sec. d.C.

Skills

The students will acquire the ability to recognize the different types of ancient war and trade ships, naval construction techniques, ancient navigation procedures and trade. They will acquire knowledge of methodologies , techniques and tools for underwater surveys and excavations. In particular, they will acquire the ability to classify vessels and amphorae which circulated in the Mediterranean regions between the 3rd cent BC and the 7th cent AD.

Durante le lezioni gli studenti saranno coinvolti in operazioni di classificazione dei reperti navali e dei loro carichi

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Breve storia della disciplina. La navigazione antica. Costruzione navale e tipologia delle imbarcazioni antiche.  Porti e scali marittimi e fluviali nel Mediterraneo. Commercio marittimo e fluviale (con approfondimenti per il III sec.a.C.-VII sec.d.C.): aspetti politici, economici e sociali. Metodologie e tecniche di prospezione, scavo e relativa documentazione. Aspetti di biologia marina (argomento trattato dal Prof. F.Maltagliati, Dipartimento di Biologia, UniPi). Verranno svolte attività seminariali per la classificazioni di reperti (in particolare anfore e vasellame) oggetto di commerci marittimi mediterranei.

Syllabus

A brief history of the subject. Ancient navigation. Naval construction and typologies of the ancient ships. Ports and maritime and river ports of call in the Mediterranean . Maritime and river trade with a special focus on the period between the 3rd cent BC and the 7th cent AD : political, economical, and social aspects. Underwater surveys, excavations, documentation. Aspects of Marine Biology, dealt with by  Prof. F.Maltagliati, Dipartimento di Biologia, UniPI).There will be seminars about the classification of finds  (in particular amphorae and vessels) traded in the Mediterranean harbours.

Modalità d'esame
  • Esame orale che consiste in:

un colloquio tra il candidato e il docente, di circa 30 minuti, che verterà sugli argomenti trattati nel programma. La prova orale non è superata se il candidato non risponderà correttamente alle domande basilari e mostrerà ripetutamente l'incapacità di mettere in relazione i diversi argomenti del programma

Assessment methods

An oral exam consisting of:

A discussion, of about 30  minutes, between the candidate and the Professor, about the topics dealt with in the course. The candidate will not pass this oral exam if he/she does not give the correct answers to important questions and repeatedly demonstrates an inability to correlate the different topics of the programme

Stage e tirocini

Gli studenti potranno partecipare agli scavi archeologici a Vada Volaterrana (S.Gaetano di Vada, Rosignano M.mo, LI) e Luna (Luni, SP) e a ricognizioni archeologico-topografiche nel territorio pisano e lunense e nelle alte valli dei fiumi Tenna ed Aso (provincie di Fermo e Ascoli)

Potranno inoltre partecipare a seminari sulla classificazione dei reperti provenienti da commerci mediterranei
