Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

The course will consist of  frontal lectures followed by a part in which the students will be directly engaged in seminars which will focus on specific aspects of the course syllabus. Seminars will be preceeded by planning sessions jointly held with the tutor and aimed at identifying the core issues, allotting reading and research, as well as by sessions before the formal presentations in the course of which the tutor will verify the work progress and its coherence with the targets set.

All the teaching materials used in frontal lectures (i.e. power-points) and detailed reading lists will be uploaded on the university e-learning platform Moodle, which will also eventually contain the work produced for the students' seminars (power-points, reading materials, final essays).

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

Visual Culture in France and Britain during the Eighteenth century: continuity, ruptures, transformations.

The course focuses on artistic production in France and Britain during the eighteenth century. Attention will focus on the developments of artistic genres that during the course of the century underwent substantial changes in both countries. Topics addressed will be 1) the birth of contemporary history painting with Benjamin West and Jacques-Louis David, which thrived alongside the more traditional history painting; 2) the sudden success of moral genre scenes by Greuze, comparable to the “comédie larmoyante” in France, and Hogarth's satyrical painting strongly associated with the emerging  literary novel in Britain; 3) the emergence of a new conception of landscape painting that replaced the seventeenth-century concept of "ideal landscape" with the new concepts of the picturesque and sublime. Artistic genres and their development will be treated with a view to the different political history of the two countries as well as to some crucial tenets in the visual culture of the time, such as the pervasive taste for Antiquity (defined by Mario Praz as the “gusto neoclassico”) which played a central role in the eighteenth century and percolated even into the applied arts; the dialogue with Italy and the Netherlands; the art market; the different role that art institutions played in the two countries. Last but not least, the movement of artists and art works will provide a crucial interpretative tool for understanding the complex processes underwent by European visual culture in the eighteenth century.
