Corso Docente: conoscenza delle forme linguistiche che caratterizzano la conversazione in lingua inglese e degli strumenti della linguistica dei corpora utili per la sua analisi.

Course: knowledge of the linguistic forms that characterize English conversation and of the tools of corpus linguistics that are useful for analyzing it.

Corso Docente: Per i frequentanti, modalità di verifica durante lo svolgimento del corso (una prova scritta in itinere e una presentazione orale conclusiva). Per gli studenti non-frequentanti, un esame scritto con domande aperte a risposta lunga e un esercizio di analisi del testo. Nel caso in cui sia necessario utilizzare le modalità distanza, la prova scritta e la presentazione orale (frequentanti) saranno svolte online, mentre l’esame scritto per i non-frequentanti sarà trasformato in forma orale e svolto online.

Course: For attending students, assessments during the course (a written midterm test and an oral presentation). For non-attending students, a final written examination with essay questions and text analysis exercise on the course content. If distance modalities are required, the written test and oral presentation (attending students) will take place online, while the written exam for non-attending students will be transformed into an online oral format.

Practical language skills class (ex-Lettorato): written and oral tests
Corso docente: essere capaci di 1) identificare le principali differenze tra il linguaggio scritto e parlato in lingua inglese, 2) distinguere e analizzare le caratteristiche della conversazione in lingua inglese, sia a livello formale sia a livello funzionale, e 3) utilizzare gli strumenti della linguistica dei corpora per svolgere analisi testuale, e 4) (per frequentanti) elaborare un progetto di gruppo e produrre/svolgere una presentazione Powerpoint.
Lingua strumentale (ex-Lettorato): essere in grado di comprendere e produrre comunicazioni scritte e orali in lingua inglese a livello C1+ dell Quadro Comune Europeo.
Course: be able to 1) identify the main differences between spoken and written English, 2) distinguish and analyze features of conversational English at both the formal and functional levels, 3) utilize tools of corpus linguistics to analyze texts, and 4) (for attending students) elaborate a group project and produce/deliver a Powerpoint presentation.
Practical language skills class (ex-Lettorato): be able to understand and produce both written and oral communication in English at the C1+ level of the European Framework.
Corso docente: Per frequentanti, superamento delle prove in itinere (test scritto) e presentazione orale conclusiva. Per non-frequentanti, superamento dell’esame scritto finale. Nel caso in cui sia necessario utilizzare le modalità distanza, la prova scritta e la presentazione orale (frequentanti) saranno svolte online, mentre l’esame scritto per i non-frequentanti sarà trasformato in forma orale e svolto online.

Lingua strumentale (ex-Lettorato): superamento di tutte le prove (calibrate a livello C1+) o possesso di una certificazione a livello C1 o C2 tra quelle indicate sul sito CLI https://www.cli.unipi.it/files/equipollenze/inglese_equip_2019?lang=it conseguita da non più di due anni. I certificati possono essere utilizzati per sostituire le prove di lettorato di un anno solo.

Practical language skills class (ex-Lettorato): Passing scores on all tests (calibrated at the C1+ level) or possession of a recognized certificate of English language competence at the C1 or C2 level among those indicated on the CLI (Centro Linguistico Ateneo - University Language Center) website https://www.cli.unipi.it/files/equipollenze/inglese_equip_2019?lang=it . The certificate must not be older than two years and may be used to substitute only one year of the practical language class.
Dopo aver superato le valutazioni relative al Corso Docente e le prove relative alla lingua strumentale, gli saranno in grado di esporre e discutere temi linguistici in prospettiva critica, nonché di dimostrare una conoscenza degli strumenti empirici della linguistica dei corpora.
After passing the assessments of the Course and the tests of the practical language skills classes, students will be able to present and critically discuss topics of linguistics, and demonstrate an understanding of the empirical tools of corpus linguistics.

Lezioni frontali (erogate in lingua inglese) che comprendono attività di gruppo per esercizi e analisi dei testi, nonché attività di laboratorio per imparare l’uso del software di analisi testuale. Durante le lezioni, le attività verranno supportate dall’ uso dei materiali audiovisivi e della piattaforma Moodle.
Classroom lectures (in English) that include group activities for exercises and text analysis, as well as laboratory activities to learn how to use software for textual analysis. During the lectures, activities will be supported with audiovisual materials and the Moodle platform.
Corso Docente
Il Corso Docente, intitolato "English conversation and corpus linguistics", si svolge nel secondo semestre. L'obiettivo è quello di approfondire gli aspetti strutturali, linguistici e pragmatici della conversazione in lingua inglese, soffermandosi sulle differenze tra il linguaggio parlato in ambito informale e il linguaggio scritto standard. Inoltre, verranno introdotte le nozioni fondamentali della linguistica dei corpora come metodologia particolarmente utile per analizzare gli elementi distintivi della conversazione. Di seguito, gli studenti avranno l'opportunità di esercitarsi nell'uso dei software per l'analisi testuale. Gli studenti frequentanti svolgeranno un progetto di ricerca di gruppo da presentare in forma orale utilizzando Powerpoint.
Lingua strumentale (ex-Lettorato):
Al Corso Docente sono affiancate esercitazioni scritte e orali nell’ambito del Lettorato (lingua strumentale). Il Lettorato è svolto da Dott. Steven Smith (vedi sito CLI) per due semestri e mira a potenziare tutte e quattro le abilità linguistiche: leggere, scrivere, ascoltare, parlare.
Course
The course is entitled "English conversation and corpus linguistics" and takes place in the second semester. It aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the structural, linguistic, and pragmatic features of English conversation, highlighting differences between informal spoken language and standard written language. The course also introduces the fundamentals of corpus linguistics as a particularly useful method for analyzing the distinguishing features of English conversation. Students will then have the opportunity to practice using text analysis software. Attending students will elaborate a group research project and present it orally using PowerPoint.

This course is supplemented by a practical language skills class taught by Dr. Steven Smith (see CLI website) and spans over the first and the second semesters, aiming to develop the four language abilities: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Per i non-frequentanti, i materiali da preparare per l’esame sono identici a quelli degli studenti frequentanti.
For non-attending students, the materials necessary to prepare the exam are the same as for attending students.
Per i frequentanti, verifiche durante lo svolgimento del corso: 1) una prova scritta in itinere con domande chiuse e a risposta breve (un terzo del voto finale) e 2) l'elaborazione di un progetto di gruppo, accompagnato da una presentazione, con valutazione individuale (due terzi del voto finale) per dimostrare la capacità di applicare le conoscenze teoriche e analitiche acquisite (due terzi del voto finale). La prova scritta e la presentazione orale saranno svolte online nel caso in cui sia necessario utilizzare le modalità a distanza.
Per non-frequentanti, un esame scritto che consiste in domande a risposta lunga sul contenuto del corso e l'analisi di un breve testo per verificare le conoscenze, competenze e capacità critiche relative ai contenuti del corso. Sarà trasformato in forma orale e svolto online nel caso in cui sia necessario utlizzare le modalità a distanza.

Il voto del Corso Docente ha una validità di TRE anni.
Lingua Strumentale (ex-Lettorato):
Il Corso Docente prevede il raggiungimento del livello C1+ di conoscenza della lingua inglese. A questo fine, lo studente dovrà/potrà, come parte del proprio lavoro individuale, integrare la propria preparazione seguendo le esercitazioni organizzate dal CLI presso il Dipartimento per il livello indicato.
La verifica delle conoscenze acquisite nelle esercitazioni si articolerà, sul modello degli esami di Cambridge, in diverse prove per verificare le abilità di reading comprehension/use of English, writing, listening comprehension, e speaking. La verifica ha una votazione complessiva di 100. Ciascuna abilità vale 25 punti ed è superata con un punteggio di 15 su 25. Ulteriori informazioni sulle modalità dello svolgimento delle prove verranno fornite sul sito https://elearning.cli.unipi.it.
Lo scritto (che comprende le abilità di reading/use of English e writing), l'ascolto, e l'orale possono essere sostenute separatamente. Perciò, se ad esempio una persona ha superato lo scritto, ma non la prova di ascolto, può ridare la prova di ascolto entro due anni conservando il punteggio dello scritto. Tuttavia, per accedere all'orale è necessario superare sia la prova scritta che la prova di ascolto. Dopo due anni qualsiasi risultato parziale decade e la prova deve essere sostenuta nuovamente. La validità del risultato positivo è DUE anni accademici (la stessa delle certificazioni internazionali riconosciute - vedi sotto. La verifica delle competenze avverrà per tutti solo a conclusione delle esercitazioni, quindi a partire da giugno. Gli studenti possono iscriversi alle prove relative alle esercitazioni e prendere visione dei risultato al sito https://elearning.cli.unipi.it.
Sono esonerati dal sostenere le verifiche delle esercitazioni gli studenti che possiedono una certificazione valida tra quelle indicate sul sito CLI (http://www.cli.unipi.it/area-internazionale/certificazioni-internazionali-1/certificazioni-internazionali) tra le quali:
- Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
- IELTS Good User (punteggio 7.0-7.5)
- Toefl: PBT (punteggio 560-619), CBT (punteggio 220-262), iBT (110-120)
N.B. I certificati possono essere utilizzati per sostituire le prove relative alle esercitazioni di un anno solo.
Anche nel caso in cui lo studente sia già in possesso di certificazione pertinente, si consiglia di partecipare alle esercitazioni al fine di mantenere e consolidare il livello di competenza acquisito.
Il voto finale di Lingua Inglese 1 è unico e i crediti sono assegnati dalla Prof.ssa Crawford in un'unica soluzione al completamento delle due parti. Il punteggio riportato nelle prove relative alle esercitazioni potrà contribuire al voto del Corso Docente fino a un massimo di due punti.
For attending students, assessments during the course: 1) a written midterm test with closed and short answer questions to verify theoretical knowledge (one third of the final grade), and 2) a group project with an oral presentation (individually assessed) to demonstrate the ability to apply theoretical knowledge and analytical skills acquired during the course (two thirds of the final grade). The midterm test and oral presentation will take place online in case distance modalities are required.
For non-attending students: a final oral examination with essay questions on the course content and an analysis of a brief text to assess learning and critical capacities relative to the course contents (to be transformed into online oral format if distance modalities are required).
N.B. Possible changes to the assessment format will be notified during the course.
The final course grade is valid for THREE years.
Practical language skills classes (ex-Lettorato):
The tests are articulated according to the Cambridge English language exams: 1) a written test that comprises the skills of reading comprehension/use of English and writing, 2) a test of listening, and 3) an oral test of speaking. The total score is based on 100 points with each skill (reading/use of English, listening, writing and speaking) worth 25 points each, with 15 points being the minimum passing score for each. Further information about how the tests will be administered will be available on https://elearning.cli.unipi.it.
The tests - written (reading/use of English and writing), listening, and oral - can be taken separately. For example, if a student passes the written (reading/use of English and writing), but not the listening, s/he can take the only listening again and maintain the passing score on the written test. However, to sit for the oral test, it is first necessary to pass the both written and the listening tests. After two years, any partial results are no longer valid and the tests must be repeated. All results of the tests are valid for two years (as for the officially recognized certificates - see below). Students can enroll for the tests and see their results at https://elearning.cli.unipi.it.
Students who possess a valid form of certification are not required to pass the tests. Certificates that are recognized can be found at http://www.cli.unipi.it/corsi/certificazioni-internazionali-1/certificazioni-internazionali, which include:
- Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
- IELTS Good User (punteggio 7.0-7.5)
- Toefl: PBT (punteggio 560-619), CBT (punteggio 220-262), iBT (110-120)
A certificate may be used to substitute only one year of the practical language class.
Students who already possess one of these certificates should still attend the practical language skills class to maintain and consolidate their acquired level of English language competence.
The final mark for whole course is assigned by the Prof. Crawford after all parts have been completed. The overall score attained on the language class tests (out of a total of 100) may contribute up to two additional points to the final mark of the course.
Propedeuticità Prove di Lettorato: Gli studenti non possono sostenere le prove di Lettorato 2 senza aver superato le prove di Lettorato 1.
Verbalizzazione del voto finale del corso: Il voto potrà essere verbalizzato solo durante i periodi relativi alle sessioni d'esame secondo il calendario accademico (nell'orario di ricevimento - consultare Unimap).

Practical language skills prerequisites: Students cannot sit for the practical language skills tests of the second year without having first passed all the corresponding tests in the first year.
Recording of final course mark: The final mark for the course can be recorded on the paper/electronic transcripts only during the official exam periods of the academic calendar (during office hours of the professor - see Unimap).
