Al termine del corso, lo studente avrà acquisito una conoscenza diretta e approfondita riguardante:
- Il concetto di wilderness in relazione alla letteratura angloamericana del Settecento e dell’Ottocento;
- Dibattito teorico sulle peculiarità e specificità dell’esperienza americana;
- I momenti e gli autori significativi della storia letteraria angloamericana dal Seicento all’Ottocento;
At the end of the course the student will possess a thorough knowledge of:
• classic American Literature of the 1700s and 1800s;
• the theoretical debate around the American experience;
• fundamental figures and moments of North American literary history;
• Una relazione orale di fronte alla classe, durante la quale si verificherà l’acquisizione degli strumenti critici proposti dal docente, applicati a testi di narrativa non presenti nella bibliografia primaria
• Un esame orale finale in cui lo studente dovrà dimostrare di conoscere la storia letteraria e le teorie critiche presentati durante il corso e di elaborarli autonomamente e criticamente;
• Il colloquio si svolgerà di norma in italiano, con alcune domande in lingua inglese.
• an oral report in class which will verify the acquisition of specific knowledge and understanding of the critical and theoretical tools presented in class applied to brief narrative and essayistic texts not included in the official reading list;
• final oral exam in which students will have to demonstrate a good knowledge of cultural and literary theories; they will also be expected to illustrate and analyse primary sources belonging to various genres and periods of North American literature and to discuss secondary sources providing different critical approaches;
• he final oral exam will also assess the knowledge of the main periods in North American literary history.
Durante il corso, lo studente maturerà la capacità di:
• applicare metodologie critiche e strumenti analitici avanzati a testi narrativi;
• leggere, interpretare e riferire oralmente su testi critici riguardanti aspetti teorici o culturali relativi ai temi affrontati nel corso;
• contestualizzare in modo appropriato e consapevole una serie di autori, opere e tematiche;
• articolare l’analisi di opere e contesti con padronanza di registro e sicurezza di approccio nei confronti di testi scritti in una lingua diversa dall’italiano
During the course activities, students will acquire skills allowing them to
• apply advanced methodological and theoretical tools to the analysis of narrative and essayistic texts
• read, analyze and report orally on critical or theoretical essays concerning literary and cultural issues variously connected with the topics of the course;
• suitably contextualize a series of authors, works and topics;
• communicate their conclusions, and the knowledge and rationale underpinning them, in a clear and unambiguous way.
Gli studenti e le studentesse dovranno preparare un oral report su un testo narrativo concordato con il docente, diverso da quelli proposti a lezione, in cui dimostreranno di saper applicare in maniera autonoma gli strumenti teorici loro proposti.
L’esame orale finale verificherà la capacità degli studenti e delle studentesse di commentare i tratti salienti dei testi primari utilizzando in maniera appropriata gli strumenti teorici e argomentando in un linguaggio e registro appropriati. Verificherà inoltre la loro attitudine allo studio autonomo della storia letteraria.
Students will be required to prepare an oral report based on a primary text (different from those proposed in the syllabus) through which their ability to autonomously apply the theoretical tools presented during the course will be tested. The final oral exam will test the students' capacity to comment on various aspects of literary texts, to use appropriate tools to deal with specific textual questions, and to resort to an appropriate linguistic register. The final oral exam will in addition verify the students’ capacity to deal with literary history in an autonomous way.
Il corso mira allo sviluppo di un atteggiamento consapevole nei confronti del lavoro di riflessione e analisi sulle questioni letterarie e testuali e sul rapporto tra testo e contesto.
Durante il corso gli studenti e le studentesse saranno chiamati a organizzare il proprio lavoro nel rispetto delle scadenze e a un uso responsabile del materiale bibliografico.
The course aims to develop a conscious attitude, on the part of the student, towards the reflection and analysis of literary and textual issues and the relationship between text and context. During the course students will also be asked to organize their work so as to be able to meet deadlines and to handle data and bibliographic material in a responsible way.
Oltre che in sede di esame finale, durante i momenti di interazione seminariale si terrà conto del grado di maturazione dello studente e della studentessa, ovvero del suo interesse, del coinvolgimento attivo e dell'impegno volti a inquadrare gli autori e i testi di riferimento in modo lucido e criticamente consapevole.
During classes, students will be able to show their involvement, growth in cognitive understanding and critical sensibility through active participation in discussions and/or the presentation of oral reports and case-based research on the authors and texts included in the syllabus

This course requires a good command of the English language.
• L’insegnamento consisterà principalmente in lezioni frontali ma saranno fortemente incoraggiati la discussione e il lavoro sui testi in classe. L’ultimissima parte del corso sarà dedicata alle presentazioni orali.

Il programma di questo insegnamento da 9 CFU (54 ore) si articola in due diverse parti, entrambe obbligatorie:

MODULO A
“la rappresentazione della Wilderness in alcuni classici della letteratura angloamericana del Settecento e dell’Ottocento”
Descrizione:
Partendo dalla definizione di Wilderness, nel contesto dell’esperienza americana, si traccerà un percorso che affronterà alcuni autori e testi canonici statunitensi dal Seicento all’Ottocento.

- War and Captivity Narratives nel Settecento

MODULO B
Il poliziesco americano
Descrizione: Partendo da una breve archeologia del genere poliziesco in Occidente, si analizzeranno le caratteristiche tematiche e stilistiche del poliziesco specificatamente americane (il cosiddetto hard-boiled), collegandole al loro contesto storico politico.

This course of American Languages and Literatures (54 hours) is structured into two units, which are both mandatory:
- Module A: “The Representation of Wilderness in American Literary Canon”
- Module B: “American Detective Novel: from Dashiell Hammett to Elmore Leonard”
MODULE A
Title: “The Representation of Wilderness in American Literary Canon”
Topic: The course aims at introducing the basic elements of the literature and culture of the United States through the lens of the representation of wilderness. We will examine some of the fundamental texts of the period from the 18th century to the 19th.
MODULE B
Title: “American Detective Novel: from Dashiell Hammett to Elmore Leonard”
Topic: This second unit aims to introduce the peculiarities of American Detective Novels through three fundamental works: Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep, and Elmore Leonard’s by Glitz

Gli studenti e le studentesse che non intendono frequentare dovranno concordare un’integrazione del programma con il docente (in questo caso la presentazione in aula viene sostituita da un paper).
Students who cannot attend classes will get in touch with the lecturer to arrange a specific program.
• Oltre alla già menzionata presentazione orale di fine corso, di cui si terrà conto per la valutazione, lo studente dovrà sostenere un esame finale in forma di colloquio orale con il docente responsabile del corso, volto ad accertare le conoscenze, le capacità e i comportamenti acquisiti nell'ambito sia del Modulo A, sia del Modulo B
• Il colloquio, da tenersi nel corso dei regolari appelli d’esame, durerà mediamente 25/30 minuti e non potrà ritenersi superato in caso di palesi lacune su parti del programma, di una scarsa capacità riflessiva e argomentativa e di evidenti carenze linguistiche
• Il colloquio si svolgerà prevalentemente in italiano, con alcune domande in lingua inglese.
• Students will be assessed through a oral report (the last week of classes) and a final oral examination during one of the scheduled sessions throughout the exam period. Questions in Italian will be followed by a few ones in English
• The final exam will cover both Module A and B and will test the students' level of knowledge, acquired skills and behaviours as illustrated in the previous sections of the syllabus. It will be about 30 minutes long

This course includes no specific training connected with work placement.
