Al termine del corso, gli studenti saranno in grado di contestualizzare i principali autori italiani moderni e contemporanei. Saranno inoltre in grado di analizzare problemi, testi e generi letterari usando concetti e termini appropriati.
By the end of this course students will be able to contextualize the main modern and contemporary Italian authors. They will also be able to use key concepts to analyze and critically engage with literary problems, texts, and genres.
Per accertare l'acquisizione delle conoscenze sono previsti due quiz scritti.
Ongoing assessment to monitor academic progress will be carried out in the form of two written quizzes.
Le lezioni alterneranno presentazioni da parte del docente e discussioni seminariali dei testi e temi affrontati.
La partecipazione attiva alle lezioni da parte degli studenti è essenziale per la riuscita del corso e incide sul voto finale.
Classes will combine lectures and collective discussions of texts and topics .
Students are expected to actively read all assigned readings before each lesson, and to contribute meaningfully to classroom discussions. While necessary in order to obtain a good class grade, attendance does not constitute participation.
Il corso costituisce il secondo modulo dell'introduzione generale alla letteratura italiana, e copre il periodo che va dalla fine del Settecento alla fine del ventesimo secolo. Nella prima parte ci si interesserà al ruolo svolto dalla letteratura, e dal romanzo in particolare, nella formazione di una identità italiana. La lettura e l'analisi di testi di Manzoni e Nievo, per citare solo gli autori più noti, permetteranno di riconoscere modelli divergenti di comunità nazionale e quindi di interrogarsi sulla complessità del Risorgimento italiano. Dopo l'unficazione, guarderemo al nuovo stato attraverso autori come Verga, Serao e De Roberto.
La seconda del corso parte si concentrerà sugli snodi più importanti del Novecento: dalla crisi del soggetto (Pirandello, Svevo), all'Italia repubblicana del secondo dopoguerra (Ortese, Fenoglio, Calvino, Pasolini), fino al collasso della prima repubblica.
This course is designed as a broad introduction to the Italian literature and culture from 18th to 20th century. In the first part, we will explore the crucial role exerted by literature, and in particular by the novel, in the creation of a collective pact around the idea that not only did a nation called Italy already exist, but that it should also be politically unified. Indeed, it is only in conjunction with the emergence of a national problem that the novel, a genre formerly “prohibited” in the Italian literary tradition, could be rehabilitated and play a fundamental role in the building of a shared understanding of the nation. The analysis of different texts will allow us to recognize conflicting ideas of national communities and thus to retrace the complexity of the Italian Risorgimento. After the unification, we will look at the new nation state through the lens provided by authors such as Verga, Serao, and De Roberto.
The unity and the reliability of the self will be put in question, in the aftermath of WWI, by Pirandello and Svevo. The last classes will be devoted to the second half of the 20th century. Through the analysis of texts by Fenoglio, Ortese, Pasolini, Morante, Calvino, and Saviano, we will explore some of the key-moments of the Italian recent history.

L'esame finale consiste in un colloquio orale durante il quale il candidato/la candidata dovrà essere in grado di discutere dei principali argomenti, autori e opere affrontati durante il corso, e di analizzare alcuni dei testi studiati.
The final exam will consist in an oral discussion of the topics addressed during the classes. Students may be required to analyze some of the texts we discussed in class.
