Conoscenze

Knowledge

Students will develop a general understanding of visual studies and contemporary image theories in aesthetics and understand these disciplines' essential vocabulary and methodologies.

Students will develop the basic knowledge to analyze visual culture and images from a critical and situated perspective.

Modalità di verifica delle conoscenze

Le conoscenze saranno verificate tramite:

1. Le discussioni in classe.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Knowledge will be tested by:

1. Class discussions.

2. The analyses of the proposed texts (see Syllabus) which will be done primarily through group work. One of the most important tasks is to complete all readings before the day of class, where they will be analyzed, presented, and discussed; understanding these materials is critical to students' success in this course. These readings will be discussed in class (even after the presentation, when possible), and it is expected that each student/scholar will not only have read them but also digested them, drawing insights, ideas, and questions to help fuel the class discussion.

3. The construction of a shared course Drive folder within which students will be expected to upload, once a week, textual or visual material commenting on topics covered during the course.

Skills

Students will develop the ability to sustain a class discussion regarding the analysis of texts and images, organizing the content of their position in a clear, concise, and logical manner.

Students will develop the skills to develop a written project (final paper) both from a content treatment standpoint (define an argument and thesis statement through evidence and sources; develop the ability to use discipline-appropriate language and synthesize topics covered in the course) and from a language, form, and style standpoint.

Assessment criteria of skills

During class discussions, practice exercises will be offered to guide argumentation and discourse organization.

A series of questions and points will be offered for text analysis to guide argumentation and discourse organization.

Comportamenti

Le studentesse e gli studenti svilupperanno:

Behaviors

Students will develop:
1. The ability to work and collaborate in groups.
2. The ability to conduct research (finding bibliography; processing content; acquiring style)

Assessment criteria of behaviors

During the group discussion, the ability to support one's own idea and mediate this with the view of the others to build a shared discourse are tested.
During text analysis, the ability to construct a clear, concise, and logical argument and reflect critically and independently on the text are tested.
Concerning the ability to conduct a small research paper, accuracy and precision will be tested.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites to take the class profitably. During the first class, however, there will be a discussion to know the students' general background.

Corequisiti

Co-requisites

Students are not required to take another parallel class while taking this course.
Any other course with image analysis among its content, regardless of methodologies and approaches, may be relevant.

Prerequisites for further study

This class is not a requirement (mandatory or recommended) for subsequent courses.

Please be sure you check your email regularly for course announcements.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Alcuni individui potrebbero trovare queste immagini inquietanti o addirittura offensive.

Syllabus

The course aims to offer an analysis of the most relevant and widespread contemporary theoretical positions in visual studies and image theory in the West.
Students will be asked to interact directly with objects, practices and texts coming, in a broad sense, from these disciplines in order to develop their reading, listening and observation skills and the basic knowledge for the analysis of the production and reception of these objects in their cultural contexts.
In the first and most extensive part of the course, an analysis of the main concepts on which visual studies and contemporary image theories are built will be conducted, placing these concepts in a possible history of these fields of knowledge. The second part will be dedicated to a partial reconstruction of the genealogy of these fields, dealing in particular with the main early 20th-century media theories.
The lectures will be constantly alternated with moments of seminar-type and exercises in reading texts and analysis of audiovisual materials for which the active participation of students is required (also subject to evaluation. See previous sections and Assessment methods).

Important Notice

The visual culture artefacts we will cover in this course may include some culturally controversial and/or politically provocative images. Some individuals may find these images disturbing or even offensive. Such images will possibly be shown solely because they represent significant aspects of visual culture. Students will not be asked to subscribe to any particular definition of visual culture, nor will they certainly be asked to like all of the images shown. However, if you choose to take this course, you will be expected to understand the issues involved and why they are important. Should any students have any particular concerns, please discuss them with the professor. S/he is always welcome to do so.

Non-attending students info

Non-attending students who intend to take the exam are kindly requested to contact the professor via email to agree on the bibliography of the exam. The exam will consist of an oral test only.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of a written test (50%) and an oral test (20%). However, participation in class discussions and guided analysis of texts also contribute to the final grade (30%).

The written test consists of a final paper of 5-7 pages (1 page corresponds to 2000 characters, including spaces), footnoted included but bibliography excluded. The paper's topic must be an in-depth study of any topics covered during the course. Although the paper's topic is at the student's choice, it must be agreed with the professor during the period of the class. During the last lecture, each student must present the main ideas of their paper (abstract) in written form to be read to the class (in a text about half a page in length). The ideas will be discussed and potentially expanded upon in a final class discussion.
The deadline for submitting the paper to the professor will be discussed during the first class.

The oral test consists of an interview between the student and the professor on the contents of the final paper lasting about 20-30 minutes. The clarity of exposition and the ability to use the basic specialized terminology explained during the class will also be evaluated.
