Il corso propone l’acquisizione di competenze di base nello studio della retorica e del suo ruolo nell'educazione superiore antica; di adeguate conoscenze dei sistemi tecnici nel loro sviluppo storico e della capacità di leggere criticamente e filologicamente i testi di retorica.
The course provides students with basic skills in the study of rhetoric and its role in ancient higher education as part of the intellectual life of Graeco-Roma élites; with adequate knowledge of rhetorical techniques and ancient teaching methods in their historical development; and with the ability to properly read rhetorical texts.
La verifica delle conoscenze si svolgerà attraverso un unico esame orale al termine del corso.
The acquisition of knowledge will be verified by a single oral examination at the end of the course.
Al termine del corso gli studenti saranno in grado di svolgere ricerche sui testi della retorica antica, di analizzare le fonti e di inquadrare i materiali nello sviluppo storico della disciplina.
At the end of the course students will be able to do proper research on ancient texts related to rhetoric and teaching, to analyse the sources and to read them into the wider context of the historical development of rhetoric in antiquity.
Le capacità saranno guidate attraverso la discussione interattiva sui testi durante le lezioni e verificate nell’esame orale finale.
Skills will be tested through interactive discussion of texts during the lectures and verified in the final oral examination. Tests are not planned during the course, but the final grading will duly take into account the level of participation of the students.
Gli studenti potranno acquisire sensibilità critica per i problemi specifici dei testi di retorica antica e per l’opera di Libanio.
Students will become fully familiar with the specific features and problems of ancient rhetorical texts as well as with Libanius’ œuvre.
Durante le lezioni verrà sollecitata la partecipazione degli studenti alle problematiche relative ai passi letti in aula.
Students will be invited to actively participate to the lessons and to discuss Greek and Latin texts proposed.

Lectures with the support of slides and appropriate multimedia technologies, open to discussion and exchange both with the lecturer and peer-to-peer. Further bibliographical insights into individual topics will be provided on the basis of students' interests and demands.

Alla scuola di Libanio: l’insegnamento della retorica nel IV secolo d.C. Attraverso la lettura dell’autobiografia (or. 1), verrà analizzata la produzione retorica di Libanio considerata nel più ampio contesto del sistema educativo del IV secolo.
The school of Libanius: the teaching of rhetoric in the 4th century CE. Through the reading of the so-called autobiography (or. 1), Libanius' rhetorical production will be analysed in the broader context of the 4th CE educational systems.

L'esame consisterà in un’unica prova orale finale (della durata orientativa di 35-45 min.) articolate in tre momenti:
- due domande sull’educazione nella tarda antichità
- due domande sulla retorica in età imperiale e tarda
- lettura, traduzione e commento di due passi dell’orazione
The examination will consist of a single final oral test (approximate duration: 35-45 min.) divided into three parts:
1. two questions on education in Late Antiquity
2. two questions on rhetoric in imperial and late antiquity
3. reading, translation and commentary on two passages from the oration of Libanius
