Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

Knowledge acquired in the courses of the first two years of Energy Engineering, with particular reference to what was taught in the courses of Chemistry and Chemical Processes, Technical Physics, Principles of Electrical Engineering, and Energetics.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

-CONCETTI INTRODUTTIVI-

Nuovi combustibili sostenibili.

Syllabus

-INTRODUCTORY CONCEPTS-

The concept of sustainability in the energy sector. Sustainability and the concept of a "short" supply chain. The consequences of the "second principle" vision: the concept of energy efficiency and its various forms. Link between sustainability and multi-objective optimization.

Sustainable sources of energy. The transition from systems entirely based on fossil sources to systems based on a growing penetration of renewable sources: problems and perspectives. Systems totally based on renewable sources and "hybrid" systems. User systems and flexibility in energy uses.

-CONVENTIONAL TECHNOLOGIES AND TECHNIQUES-

Solar energy and the prospects for expansion of its use. Uses of solar power for industrial and civil thermal production: case studies, problems and perspectives.

The role of thermal energy storage systems and their integration with production and utilization systems.

Methods for energy sustainability: integration between thermal and electric energy systems. Heat pumps and the shift of thermal energy production from fossil fuels to renewable sources.

Technologies for energy sustainability: plants for the combined production of several useful effects: cogeneration and polygeneration plants.

Energy sustainability and techniques for dynamic energy data analysis.

Materials and technologies for building and energy sustainability. Natural materials and specific construction techniques. Control systems and energy diagnosis.

Design and sizing methods for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems.

Including the concept of energy sustainability in a more general framework: the method of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Perspectives and limits in the application to open systems and a possible engineering vision of the "system closure" problem.

-NEW SCENARIOS AND TECHNIQUES FOR THE ENERGY TRANSITION-

Renewable non-conventional energy systems and new technologies.

Biomass, biofuels, and bioenergy: the maintenance of the territory and the integration of energy and agriculture. Plants and problems related to the sustainable use of bioenergy. New sustainable fuels.

Assessment methods

The final exam is conducted in oral mode. The duration is about one hour per candidate. The student presents some case studies to the examination committee. In addition to the taught topics, the committee evaluates the student on his/her ability to apply the acquired knowledge to these cases.
