Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

From Pessoa to Anthropophagy: Aspects of Modernism in Portugal and Brazil

The aim of the course is not only to provide the tools to understand the peculiar historical and literary dynamics of the Portuguese-speaking world, of the modern and contemporary age, but also to reflect, through the reading and commentary of the most representative texts, on the modulation of modernism and the avant-garde in Portugal and Brazil, without neglecting the declinations of the movements in Africa (in particular in Cape Verde).

For the first point, the most representative personalities of the literary currents from the 18th century to the present day will be selected and contextualised within the particular historical-political framework.

For the second, we will consider what modernism and avant-garde mean in the Portuguese-speaking world, with respect to what the two terms evoke at an international level; we will examine what were, in Portugal and Brazil, the prodromes of their respective modernities and how they were influenced by European and international currents. We will reflect, among other topics, on Pessoa's heteronymy and -isms, Mário de Andrade's 'desvairismo', Oswald de Andrade's 'anthropophagy' and the interactions between groups 'from here and across the ocean', and the experience of the Cape Verdean journal 'Claridade'.

Third-year students
For third-year students, who have already taken the two years, and who therefore will not take the usual preparatory written test, will be organized an introductory seminar for the preparation of the final paper: the aim is to initiate students to practice research. independently in its various aspects - from the selection of the topic, to the identification of the bibliography, to the retrieval of the same, to the presentation and discussion of the readings completed, up to the drafting of a critical paper.

Non-attending students info

For non-attending students the program is identical. Non-attending students will be required to consolidate their preparation by extending the study to the whole the bibliography on the final exam programme that will be uploaded to Moodle, and will have to deal with independent reading and commenting of literary texts.

Non-attending students are asked to contact the professor at the beginning of the course.

  1. Seconda annualità di Letteratura:
  • prova scritta PROPEDEUTICA all'orale.

COMMISSIONE D'ESAME:

  • Prof.ssa Valeria Tocco
  • Prof.ssa Monica Lupetti
  • Dott.ssa Sofia Morabito
Assessment methods

The final vote will will result from the weighted average of the various activities planned, which consist of:

  • A compulsory written test before the oral exam. The written test consists of a test divided into two parts. In the first one, which is a little more notionistic, the student will have to define in a precise but synthetic way some given phenomena, s/he will have to indicate dates or authors, place historical-political events in time and decide on the reliability of some statements. In the second, a freer part, s/he will have to express him/herself in Italian correctly by presenting an author, commenting on a prose text and a poetic text.
  • An oral exam on the course topics.

Third year students

  • Third-year Literature: written essay on a subject of the course agreed with the professor, to be delivered in .docx or .pdf format one week before the oral exam.
  • Oral exam in Portuguese on the subject of the course.

Students must register both for the written test and for the oral examination on the University System (registration will end 5 days before the test date: non-registered students will not be accepted). The student can also take the ORAL exam in an exam session which is subsequent to the one in which he / she passed the written test (preparatory). However, if the student do not complete the exam in one year, he/she will have to repeat the written test.
