Conoscenze

Knowledge

Students will be able to acquire knowledge in a major area of the history of ancient philosophy, by exploring the Stoic theory of the soul.

Assessment criteria of knowledge

The evaluation will take place through an oral presentation – i.e. a seminar, held during the course, on a topic related to the programme – and an oral exam at the end of the course.

Skills

Students are expected to acquire the skill to critically examining the texts and topics explored during the course, and to correctly frame them within their historical-philosophical context.

Assessment criteria of skills

The evaluation of skills will be based on the same method used to assess learning.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

Students will be able to acquire and develop not just accuracy in the interpretation and assessment of the views presented in the texts read and discussed in class, but also a critical approach to the use of Classical texts in the debate on contemporary issues.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

Active engagement by the students will constantly be encouraged during the taught lectures and seminars alike.

Prerequisiti (conoscenze iniziali)

Prerequisites

General knowledge of ancient philosophy is expected and in particular of Stoic philosophy. For an overview, the following texts are recommended: M. Isnardi Parente, Introduzione a Lo stoicismo ellenistico, Bari, Laterza 1993; T. Bénatouïl, “Lo stoicismo ellenistico fino al I secolo a.C.”, in E. Spinelli (ed), Roma, Carocci 2016, pp. 113-135; D. Sedley, “Stoicism”, in Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy(https://www.rep.routledge.com/articles/thematic/stoicism/v-1); D. Baltzly, “Stoicism”, The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/stoicism/).

Indicazioni metodologiche

Teaching methods

The first stage of the course, based on taught lectures, will be followed by seminars held by the students attending the course. The main resource will be the Stoics' fragments, which are expected to be read in the light of the interpretations expounded in the recommended secondary literature. Further teaching material may be provided during the lectures. References to the original texts will be made understandable even to students who do not know ancient Greek.

Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Syllabus

The Stoic theory of the soul

The course explores the field of psychology in the old Stoa. After an introductory part, devoted to illustrating the role of the reflection on the soul in the Stoic system, we will read and analyse the main sources concerning the Stoic doctrine of the soul’s nature, its faculties and its relationship with the body (within a corporealist view of the soul). We will focus on some crucial notions of Stoic physics and psychology – i.e., the concepts of pneuma, tonos and hegemonikon – and on several intersections with other fields, such as ethics, epistemology, theory of perception, and embryology. Comparisons with other influential theories of the soul, such as the Platonic, the Aristotelian and the Epicurean doctrines, will be introduced.
