Conoscenze

- Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE)
- IELTS Good User (punteggio 8-9)
- Toefl: PBT (score: 590-677), CBT (score: 243-300), iBT (96-20)

Knowledge

In the lecturer’s course, special attention will be paid to the study of sociolinguistics and pragmatics, with a view to give students instruments to carry out comprehensive analyses of oral and written texts in relation to some parameters of variation. In the second part of the course, several case studies will be presented, with a special focus on issues of linguistic variation, both in literature and in cinema, in particular the representation of diastratic varieties and teen talk as examples of innovation and emotionally charged language.

Overall, the course aims at achieving the C1+/C2 level of English proficiency. For this purpose, the course of the lectuerer is associated with an English Language Course at C1+/C2 level of the CEFR, which will be held for two semesters. At the end of the two semesters, students can take the language test. Possession of the required level, C1+/C2, will be necessary to be able to obtain a mark. The language test may be replaced by an international C2 level certificate

- Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE)
- IELTS Good User (punteggio 8-9)
- Toefl: PBT (score: 590-677), CBT (score: 243-300), iBT (96-20)

obtained no sooner than two years. Language classes last throughout the year. They are taught by Dr Wendy Doherty and focus on all skills. Non attending (or non regularly attending) students are required to contact Dr Doherty to obtain information and/or to agree on alternative programmes. Information about language classes and related tests are available on https:///elearning.cli.unipi.it/mod/url/view.php?id=51. English CELs (Collaboratori ed Esperti Linguistici) receive students in the premises of the CLI located in Via S. Maria 85 (palazzo Boilleau).

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Attending students can sit prove in itinere (a written test, a brief report and an oral presentation, also in group). Non-attending students will have to sit an oral test.

Skills

Students will have to know the main concepts of sociolinguistics and pragmatics and apply them to the analysis of oral and written language.

Assessment criteria of skills

For regular attenders the modality of continuous assessment includes TWO intermediate tests on theoretical aspects of sociolinguistics and pragmatics and a report on some mandatory readings; and an oral group presentation to evaluate analytical skills. The overall mark is the average of the marks obtained in the three tests.

For non attenders there is an oral exam to evaluate theoretical and analytical skills.

Comportamenti

Behaviors

Students will be able to describe and analyse in depth and with the adequate specialised terminology an interaction in written and oral texts, by employing specific socio-pragmatic parameters.

Assessment criteria of behaviors

Analytical skills will be assessed through an oral group presentation. Students will be assigned an individual mark. For non-attending students these skills will be evaluated in the oral exam.

- Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE)

- IELTS Good User (punteggio 8-9)

- Toefl: PBT (score: 590-677), CBT (score: 243-300), iBT (96-20)

Assessment methods

The course consists of two parts, whose assessment methods are specified below:

1) lectures by prof. Bruti (first semester): attending students can sit prove in itinere (a written test, a brief report on mandatory readings and an oral group presentation). Non-attending students will take an oral test.

2) instrumental language classes with Dr Doherty (first and second semesters), ending with both written and oral tests on all 4 skills aimed at ascertaining the possession of the C1+/C2 level. Alternatively, the following certificates are accepted:

- Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE)

- IELTS Good User (punteggio 8-9)

- Toefl: PBT (score: 590-677), CBT (score: 243-300), iBT (96-20)

provided they were obtained no sooner than 2 years before the recording of the exam. The assessment will be expressed in letters (e.g. A = C2 in some skills; B = solid C1+ on all skills; C = C1+ in almost all skills). There are three exam sessions (one in summer, one in autumn, one in winter).

To be able to have a mark recorded, students must have the required language level. The evaluation reported in the language tests will be duly taken into account.
