Programma (contenuti dell'insegnamento)

Censura, dittatura, memoria: discorsi e controdiscorsi

Syllabus

Censura, dittatura, memoria: discorsi e controdiscorsi

Censorship, dictatorship, memory: speeches and counter speeches

In Portugal (and Portuguese Africa) the Estado Novo dictatorship ruled from 1933 to 1974, in Brazil the militaries came to power in 1964 and held it bloody until 1985. Orwell said 'Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past' (1984). How was the discourse of dictatorship shaped in Portugal (and African colonies) or in Brazil: which past was narrated to control present and future? Through the commentary of texts by writers and poets who distinguished themselves for their opposition to the regimes (e.g. José Cardoso Pires, Alexandre O'Neill, Ruben A., Caio Fernando Abreu, Chico Buarque, Luandino Vieira) we will try to illustrate the peculiarities of the relationship between power and culture in Portuguese-speaking countries, starting from the post-war period, in search of the modalisations of the counter-discourses and representations of memory of those who managed to express dissent and give voice to silence.
