La storia della matematica ha delle specificità sue proprie che la distinguono da un lato dal suo oggetto di ricerca, dall'altra dalla storia intesa come disciplina generale. Il corso si propone, attraverso l'analisi di case-studies tratti dalla storia della matematica antica e della matematica moderna, di presentare gli interrogativi che si pongono allo studioso che voglia affrontare lo studio di un determinato problema, autore o periodo storico.
Le domande che uno storico dovrebbe porsi, a titolo di esempio sono: qual è il problema che l’autore intende risolvere? E’ lecito impiegare il linguaggio moderno per descriverlo? Perché il problema che l’autore si pone è interessante? Quali sono le tecniche impiegate dall’autore?
The history of mathematics has its own specificities which distinguish it on the one hand from its research object, on the other from history understood as a general discipline. The course aims, through the analysis of case studies drawn from the history of ancient and modern mathematics, to present the questions that arise to the scholar who wants to tackle the study of a specific problem, author or historical period.
The questions that a historian should ask himself, by way of example, are: what is the problem that the author intends to solve? Is it legitimate to use modern language to describe it? Why is the problem the author poses interesting? What are the techniques used by the author?

Presentation of a seminar during which the student will have to demonstrate that he is able to discuss problems related to the issues addressed in the course, even if not directly involved in the topic agreed upon with the teachers.
Affrontare lo studio diretto di una fonte e della letteratura critica relativa a un determinato problema o autore.
To deal with the direct study of a source and of the critical literature relating to a specific problem or author.

Non sono previsti particolari prerequisiti se non uno spiccato interesse per la storia e la matematica.
Tuttavia è decisamente auspicabile -- anche se non strettamente necessaria -- una conoscenza anche elementare del latino e/o del francese e/o del tedesco. È anche auspicabile una conoscenza delle grandi linee della storia della matematica occidentale (almeno dai Greci all'invenzione del calcolo infinitesimale).
There are no particular prerequisites other than a keen interest in history and mathematics.
However, it is definitely desirable - even if not strictly necessary - even an elementary knowledge of Latin and / or French and / or German. A knowledge of the main lines of the history of Western mathematics (at least from the Greeks to the invention of the infinitesimal calculus) is also desirable.

Attraverso l'analisi di case studies tratti dalla matematica antica, della prima età moderna e dalla matematica dell'Ottocento verranno presentate le fonti e la letteratura critica relativa, centrando la discussione sui seguenti problemi:
