Learning outcomes
Knowledge

The course aims at the acquisition of communicative skills in French corresponding to C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). 

The student will be sensitized to linguistic problems related to the analysis of hate speech (French language);

 

Assessment criteria of knowledge

Regular classroom exercises, collecting small corpora, readings and linguistic comments in the classroom (in application to the frontal lesson).

Skills

By the end of the course, students will be able to: 

-identify the relevant linguistic forms (explicit and implicit) attributable to hate speech;

Assessment criteria of skills

Students will be asked to do complementary activities on E-learning platform. 

Behaviors

Students will improve their writing and oral skills in French. 

Assessment criteria of behaviors

Following seminar activities, students will be requested to submit short reports concerning the topics discussed. 

Prerequisites

Students should have linguistic skills in French corresponding to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). 

Teaching methods

The lessons are held frontally (in French) with the help of handout available on the Moodle platform; The scientific articles read in class will also be available on Moodle;

Syllabus

Title of the course: “Analyzing Hate Speech ”

  • Define emotion: hatred (anger, contempt, disgust);
  • Forms of pathos in speeches (pathos vs logos): subvert the Order of Discourse;
  • Detecting forms of verbal violence from the signifier (oral and written);
  • Identity / otherness (“them” vs “us”): sexist, homophobic, racist statements, fat-shaming;
  • Insult, profanity, defamation: linguistic-legal aspects;
  • Subversion in discourse: negation, denial, negationism;
  • The memory of words: implicit, implied, stereotypes and topoi;
  • What is meant by "politically correct speech" and "freedom of expression" (based on discourse analysis)?
  • Responding to hate: alternative hate speech.

The exam consists of written test. Furthermore, students will be asked to produce a personal research.
