Obiettivo dell'insegnamento è quello di sviluppare nello studente l'attitudine ad utilizzare il metodo statistico per supportare i processi decisionali dell'azienda. Dato un determinato quesito manageriale, lo studente dovrà essere in grado di tradurlo in linguaggio statistico e di produrre la migliore informazione, utilizzando i dati a disposizione ed applicando il metodo statistico più idoneo. Lo studente acquisirà la conoscenza di alcuni metodi statistici e sarà in grado di applicarli a problemi concreti. Inoltre sarà in grado di orientarsi tra le principali fonti di dati sull'azienda prodotte in Italia, sia a livello micro che a livello macro.
The student who successfully completes the course will become familiar with the use of statistical thinking in the business decision-making process. Given a managerial decision problem, the student will be able to translate it into statistical language in order to produce the best information for supporting the managerial decision. The student will acquire statistical tools and be able to use them to address empirical problems. Furthermore she/he will be able to demonstrate a solid knowledge of the Italian data sources concerning businesses activities, both at the macro and micro level.
In the written exam (1 hour and half) the student will be asked to answer theoretical questions and to solve exercises. The student will be assessed on his/her ability to choose the appropriate statistical tool and to correctly apply it.

Teaching methods:
The first part of the course focuses on data be they already available data (from official and non-official statistics) or data produced by the business itself (sample survey). The second part of the course is aimed at analysing and comparing some business-related phenomena through proper descriptive statistical ratios (i.e. index numbers). The third part of the course introduces basic statistical methodology for Quality control and improvement (analysis of variance, control charts). The last part of the course introduces the regression analysis for studying relationship between business-related quantitative variables. Given the applied focus of the course, various case studies are presented.
