Titolo: Normalità, patologia, conflitti: aspetti simbolici dell’alimentazione e anoressia-bulimia
Title: Normality, Pathology, conflicts: symbolic aspects of alimentation and Anorexia-Bulimia
In the first part of the course the complex relationship between normality and psychic pathology will be explored, together with eventual educational routes to help preventing the most increasing psychic pathologies. We will consider, in particular depression, personality disorders, anxiety disorders and eating disorders. Learning to coexist with everyday anxieties, to elaborate fears and conflicts, to model the psychic suffering from a destructive element into a formative resource, implies an ability to create a balanced relationship between the rational and the emotional dimensions of intelligence.
We will also examine in depth the main themes related to alimentation, considering the symbolic and cultural aspects of normality and pathology in an historical and meta-historical sense.
The Eating Disorders will be analyzed by comparison between recent studies with a classic text: “The case of Ellen West”. The essay, published in 1944 by the psychiatrist Ludwig Binswanger, was about the dramatic episode of an anorexic-bulimic woman that he had assisted in 1921 and that he had signed off knowing she would commit suicide eventually. The anorexic experience, after all, can be seen as a way to self-punishment by the elimination of the own physical and spiritual existence or as a way to express a frustrated lust for omnipotence.
