Approfondimenti di alcuni temi della storia dell'arte internazionale dal minimalismo al postmodernismo.
The student who successfully completes the course will have a good knowledge of the major artists and art movements that have shaped the history of western art from neoclassicism-romanticism to present. The student will be aware of various critical approaches, blending formal analysis to the understanding of some of the political, cultural, and philosophical issues embedded in much of contemporary art. Teaching methods:
Teoria dell'avanguardia.
We will examine a selection of artworks by major artists and artistic movements of contemporary age (from the French Revolution to present). In addition to a formal-stylistic appreciation, those works will be considered in the wider contexts of politics, mentality, and culture, under the assumption that art can be understood as a way to aesthetically embody issues of political, social, national, autobiographical, sexual and ethnic identities. We will also discuss the shifting notion of “value” in modernist art, the collapse of hierarchy between “high” and “low” culture prompted by industrialization, the mass ideologies of the 20th century, and mass consumerism in the western hemisphere. Lectures in the classroom will expand on, and add to, selected parts of the assigned readings, and do not simply follow them. Therefore attendance is recommended. Some field trips, in temporary shows, or visit to museums, or artist studios, may take place in lieu of lectures in the classroom.
