Nel corso docente, si affrontano le forme linguistiche che caratterizzano la conversazione in lingua inglese e degli strumenti della linguistica dei corpora utili per la sua analisi. Nella prima parte del corso si analizzeranno le ‘grammatiche della conversazione’ in inglese, mentre nella seconda si procederà all’analisi e alla discussione di diversi case studies incentrati su tipi diversi di inglese parlato, ad esempio il parlato filmico e quello in ambito professionale.
Complessivamente, il corso mira al raggiungimento del livello C1+ di competenza della lingua inglese. A questo fine, al corso della docente è associato un lettorato di Lingua Inglese di livello C1+ del QCER, che si terrà per due semestri. Al termine dei due semestri gli studenti possono sostenere la prova di competenza pratica della lingua. Il possesso del livello richiesto, C1+, sarà requisito necessario per poter verbalizzare l’esame. La prova di lettorato può essere sostituita da una delle seguenti certificazioni internazionali:
- Cambridge Proficiency in English (CAE)
- IELTS Good User (punteggio 7.00/7.5)
- Toefl: PBT (score: 560-619), CBT (score: 220-262), iBT (110-120)
conseguita da non più di 2 anni. Il corso di lingua strumentale, di durata annuale, è tenuto dal Dott. Thomas Burdett. Il corso si concentra su tutte le abilità. I non frequentanti sono tenuti a mettersi in contatto il Dott. Thomas Burdett per informazioni e per concordare programmi da non frequentanti. In the course, we will address the linguistic forms that characterize conversation in the English language, as well as the corpus linguistics tools useful for its analysis. In the first part of the course, we will analyze the "grammars of conversation" in English, while in the second part, we will proceed with the analysis and discussion of various case studies focused on different types of spoken English, such as film dialogue and professional discourse. Overall, the course aims to achieve a C1+ level of proficiency in the English language. To this end, the course is associated with a C1+ level English Language Lecture, which will be held for two semesters. At the end of the two semesters, students can take the practical language proficiency test. Possessing the required C1+ level will be a necessary requirement to pass the exam.
The language test can be substituted with an international certification:
- Cambridge Proficiency in English (CAE)
- IELTS Good User (punteggio 7.00/7.5)
- Toefl: PBT (score: 560-619), CBT (score: 220-262), iBT (110-120)
obtained no more than 2 years ago. The instrumental language course, which lasts for one year, is taught by Dr. Thomas Burdett. The course focuses on all skills. Non-attending students are required to contact Dr. Thomas Burdett for information and to agree on programs for non-attending students. The CEL (Collaborators and Linguistic Experts) will receive students at the CLI premises located at Via S. Maria 85 (Palazzo Boilleau).
Per i frequentanti, è prevista una modalità di verifica durante lo svolgimento del corso (una prova scritta in itinere e una presentazione orale di gruppo conclusiva). Per gli studenti non-frequentanti è previsto un esame scritto a scelta multipla e un esame orale con domande sui contenuti del corso e un esercizio di analisi del testo.
Lingua strumentale (ex-Lettorato): Prove scritte e orali
For attending students, there will be a form of assessment during the course, which includes an in-progress written test and a final group oral presentation. For non-attending students, there will be a multiple-choice written exam and an oral exam consisting of questions about the course content and a text analysis exercise.
Instrumental language (formerly Language Lecture): Written and oral tests.
Lo studente dovrà essere capace di 1) identificare le principali differenze tra il linguaggio scritto e parlato in lingua inglese, 2) distinguere e analizzare le caratteristiche della conversazione in lingua inglese, sia a livello formale sia a livello funzionale, e 3) utilizzare gli strumenti della linguistica dei corpora per svolgere analisi testuale, e 4) (per frequentanti) elaborare un progetto di gruppo e produrre/svolgere una presentazione Powerpoint.
Lingua strumentale (ex-Lettorato): lo studente dovrà essere in grado di comprendere e produrre comunicazioni scritte e orali in lingua inglese a livello C1+ del Quadro Comune Europeo.
Students should be able to 1) identify the main differences between written and spoken language in English, 2) distinguish and analyze the characteristics of conversation in English, both at a formal and functional level, 3) use corpus linguistics tools to perform textual analysis, 4)for attending students) Develop a group project and produce/conduct a PowerPoint presentation.
Instrumental language: Students should be able to understand and produce written and oral communications in English at a C1+ level of the Common European Framework.
Per i frequentanti, è prevista una modalità di verifica durante lo svolgimento del corso (una prova scritta in itinere e una presentazione orale di gruppo conclusiva). Per gli studenti non-frequentanti è previsto un esame scritto a scelta multipla e un esame orale con domande sui contenuti del corso e un esercizio di analisi del testo.

For attending students, the in-progress assessment includes a computer-based written test on the knowledge of the course content, and a group oral presentation to evaluate the acquired analytical skills. The final grade will be obtained by averaging the scores of these assessments.
For non-attending students, the exam consists of passing the final written exam and the oral test.
Gli studenti saranno in grado di esporre e discutere temi linguistici, in particolare quelli legati alla lingua parlata, in prospettiva critica, nonché́ di dimostrare una conoscenza degli strumenti empirici della linguistica dei corpora.
Students will be able to present and discuss linguistic topics, particularly those related to spoken language, from a critical perspective, as well as demonstrate knowledge of empirical tools in corpus linguistics.
Le capacità di analisi saranno verificate tramite la presentazione e discussione del lavoro di gruppo (frequentanti) o durante il colloquio orale conclusivo (non-frequentanti).
Analytical skills will be assessed through the presentation and discussion of the group project work (for attending students) or during the final oral interview (for non-attending students).

Il corso, intitolato "Spoken English and corpus linguistics", si svolge nel secondo semestre. L'obiettivo è quello di approfondire gli aspetti strutturali, linguistici e pragmatici dell’inglese parlato, soffermandosi sulle differenze tra il linguaggio parlato in ambito informale e il linguaggio scritto standard. Inoltre, verranno introdotte le nozioni fondamentali della linguistica dei corpora come metodologia utile per analizzare gli elementi distintivi dell’oralità in inglese. Si prenderanno in analisi anche diversi case studies incentrati su tipi diversi di inglese parlato, come ad esempio il parlato filmico e quello in ambito professionale. Inoltre, gli studenti avranno l'opportunità̀ di esercitarsi nell'uso dei software per l'analisi testuale. Gli studenti frequentanti lavoreranno a un progetto di ricerca di gruppo da presentare in forma orale utilizzando Powerpoint. Lingua strumentale (ex-Lettorato).
The Course, titled "Spoken English and Corpus Linguistics," takes place in the second semester. The objective is to delve into the structural, linguistic, and pragmatic aspects of spoken English, focusing on the differences between informal spoken language and standard written language. Additionally, fundamental notions of corpus linguistics will be introduced as a useful methodology for analyzing distinctive features of orality in English. Various case studies centered around different types of spoken English, such as film dialogue and professional discourse, will also be examined. Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to practice using software for textual analysis. Attending students will work on a group research project to be presented orally using PowerPoint.

Per i frequentanti la modalità in itinere prevede una prova scritta in itinere (test informatizzato sulla conoscenza dei contenuti del corso); e una presentazione orale di gruppo per valutare le capacità analitiche acquisite. Il voto sarà ottenuto dalla media delle prove.
Per i non frequentanti l’esame prevede il superamento di un esame scritto finale (domande a scelta multipla e domande aperte a risposta breve) e di un esame orale (domande aperte e analisi di un testo).
La parte di lingua strumentale con il Dott. Thomas Burdett (primo e secondo semestre) prevede una serie di prove, alla fine del corso, volto a testare il raggiungimento del livello C1+. In alternativa si accettano i seguenti certificati
- Cambridge Proficiency in English (CAE)
- IELTS Good User (punteggio 7.00/7.5)
- Toefl: PBT (score: 560-619), CBT (score: 220-262), iBT (110-120)
conseguiti da non più di due anni (con riferimento alla data di verbalizzazione dell’esame). Gli appelli per le prove di lettorato alla magistrale sono TRE (uno estivo, uno autunnale, uno invernale).
Per verbalizzare l’esame è necessario il possesso del livello linguistico. La valutazione riportata nelle prove delle esercitazioni sarà tenuta in debito conto.

The instrumental language part with Dr. Thomas Burdett (first and second semester) includes a series of assessments at the end of the course to test the attainment of the C1+ level. Alternatively, the following certificates are accepted:

- IELTS Good User (punteggio 7.00/7.5)
- Toefl: PBT (score: 560-619), CBT (score: 220-262), iBT (110-120)
provided they were obtained no later than 2 years before the recording of the exam. There are three exam sessions (one in summer, one in autumn, one in winter).
To be able to have a mark recorded, students must have the required language level. The evaluation reported in the language tests will be duly taken into account.
