Al termine del corso gli studenti avranno acquisito approfondite conoscenze in relazione ai testi teatrali della letteratura greca di età classica (soprattutto di genere satiresco, ma anche, per confronto, comico e tragico), e alla loro trasmissione testuale, tradizione erudita e ricezione culturale.
At the end of the course, students will have acquired in-depth knowledge in relation to the texts of Greek literature from the Classical and Early Hellenistic periods produced for the stage, as well as knowledge regarding their textual transmission, scholarly tradition and cultural reception.
Durante l’articolazione delle lezioni, la partecipazione e l’interazione degli studenti tra loro e con la docente rappresenterà un elemento di prima e costante verifica dell’apprendimento.
Durante l’esame orale finale (vd. anche infra, “Modalità d’esame”) sarà verificata l’abilità traduttiva dal greco all’italiano e la conoscenza sia di problemi testuali minuti sia di fenomeni ampi e complessi di interpretazione, categorizzazione storico-letteraria e anche messa in scena dello spettacolo teatrale.
During the lectures, the participation and interaction of the students with each other and with the lecturer will represent an element of first and constant verification of learning success.
During the final oral examination (see also below, "Assessment methods"), students will be tested with regard to their ability to translate from Greek into Italian and to their knowledge of both specific textual problems and the broad and complex phenomena of the staging, interpretation and historical-literary categorisation of ancient Greek plays.
Al termine del corso gli studenti saranno in grado di valutare il teatro attico - in special modo nel suo (sotto-)genere satiresco - come fatto di testo e di spettacolo, sotto la guida di lettori ad esso coevi o comunque ancora relativamente vicino a testi drammatici oggi del tutto perduti e/o frammentari e alla realtà originaria di rappresentazione e fruizione degli stessi.
At the end of the course, students will be able to evaluate Attic theatre as a fact of text and performance, under the guidance of ancient readers who were still close to dramatic texts today lost and/or fragmentary but at times already quite distant from the original reality of their representation and fruition.
Le capacità acquisite verranno valutate in sede di esame finale così come durante le lezioni, attraverso la richiesta di partecipazione alla discussione dei testi analizzati. Potranno essere rivolti agli studenti anche inviti a tradurre (su base volontaria) all'impronta i brani proposti e/o proiettati dalla docente su slides.
Nella parte finale del corso potrà essere incoraggiata l’analisi autonoma di passi o problemi scelti nell’ambito di brevi relazioni seminariali (facoltative) tenute dagli studenti.
The acquired skills will be assessed in the final examination as well as during the lectures, through the request to participate in the discussion of the analysed texts. In the final part of the course, the autonomous analysis of passages or problems chosen in short seminar papers given by the students will be encouraged.
Gli studenti dovranno acquisire familiarità con i meccanismi di messa in scena del teatro antico e della sua categorizzazione e trasmissione coeva e postuma, nonché con il relativo lessico specifico, impiegandolo concretamente nell’esegesi ed esposizione di singoli casi di studio.
Students are expected to become familiar with the mechanisms of the staging of ancient theatre and its coeval and posthumous categorisation and transmission, as well as with the relevant specific vocabulary, employing it concretely in the exegesis and exposition of individual case studies.
Durante le lezioni verranno analizzate ampie testimonianze relative a drammi satireschi antichi sia oggi conservati per intero sia (soprattutto) frammentari.
Traduzioni ed esegesi verranno condotte in collaborazione con gli studenti, anche attraverso il confronto dialettico con traduzioni già esistenti in italiano (o altre lingue).
During the lectures, large sections of ancient literature about satyric drama will be analysed; the translation and exegesis of the selected passages will be conducted in collaboration with the students, also by means of dialectical comparison with already existing translations in Italian (or other languages).
Il corso richiede buone conoscenze linguistiche e storico-letterarie e una essenziale familiarità con le problematiche legate al teatro antico in quanto genere letterario codificato, conoscenze di cui gli studenti sono in possesso al termine della Laurea triennale in Lettere.
The course requires good linguistic and literary-historical knowledge and an essential familiarity with the problems associated with ancient theatre as a codified literary genre such as the students possess at the end of their three-year degree in Classics.
Lezioni frontali, con l’aiuto di slides ed altri strumenti digitali; esercitazioni di lettura, traduzione e interpretazione in classe (non valutative); interazione sia con la docente sia tra pari; possibilità di brevi relazioni seminariali e discussioni.
Per un maggior profitto del corso, è raccomandata attività di studio individuale e di approfondimento bibliografico anche in corso d’opera.
Le lezioni si terranno in lingua italiana.
Face-to-face lectures, with the aid of slides and other electronic teaching tools; metrical reading exercises (non-valutative); interaction with both teachers and peers; brief expositions.
Lessons will be held in Italian.
For a better learning outcome, it is recommended that the students carry out individual study and exercises as well as in-depth bibliographical research also during the teaching period.
“Il dramma satiresco greco dalle origini all'età bizantina”
Il corso propone un accostamento monografico al dramma satiresco greco come fatto di testo e di spettacolo; nello specifico, si cercherà di tracciare una storia di questo genere drammatico comunemente considerato "il fratello minore" rispetto alle sue "sorelle" commedia e tragedia che abbia un'impostazione diversa dalle consuete (di impianto tradizionalmente cronologico, autoriale o tematico): questa storia sarà dettata dalla viva voce - scritta - dei tanti autori di età classica, ellenistica, imperiale, tardo-antica e bizantina che dei testi satireschi ancora in parte più o meno larga direttamente leggevano e tra loro discutevano.
In concreto, il corso proporrà una lettura commentata di un'ampia scelta delle testimonianze secondarie in lingua greca (e, in misura minore, latina) relative al dramma satiresco: attraverso queste testimonianze si studieranno tutti gli aspetti salienti del satyrikòn, dalla genesi (in ovvio rapporto alla vexata quaestio della "nascita della tragedia") alla sua funzione per se e all'interno della tetralogia dionisiaca, dalla sua terminologia alla sua ricezione e sopravvivenza nel Medioevo Greco e a Roma. La scelta delle testimonianze sarà effettuata dalla docente, ma è volentieri integrabile con proposte di lettura degli studenti.
Gli autori-testimoni considerati saranno sia intellettuali ancora coevi al fenomeno satiresco nel suo Sitz im Leben originario come Platone, Aristofane e l'Aristotele della Poetica sia, inoltre, fruitori più tardi e tardissimi come i filologi alessandrini, i prosatori imperiali (retori, biografi etc.), i Padri della Chiesa fino agli epigoni bizantini (da Giovanni Malala a Giovanni Tzetze). Attenzione sarà data anche alle attestazioni epigrafiche e papiracee della sopravvivenza e anche vitalità di testi satireschi in Grecia e poi nelle varie zone dell'Impero Romano. Si faranno inoltre, ovviamente, anche selezionate letture primarie dai testi superstiti del dramma satiresco antico quando pertinente al discorso sviluppato (letture tratte dal Ciclope euripideo, a noi gounto per tradizione manoscritta, ma anche dai drammi frammentari, di tradizione papiracea e non).
"Greek Satyr Drama from the Origins to the Byzantine Age"
The course proposes a monographic approach to the Greek satyr-drama as a fact of text and performance; specifically, an attempt will be made to trace a history of this dramatic genre commonly considered "the younger brother" with respect to its "sisters" comedy and tragedy that has a different approach from the usual one (traditionally chronological, authorial or thematic): this history will be dictated by the living - written - voice of the many authors of the classical, Hellenistic, imperial, late antique and Byzantine ages who still read and discussed the satirical texts to a greater or lesser extent directly among themselves.
In concrete terms, the course will propose an annotated reading of a wide selection of secondary testimonies in Greek (and, to a lesser extent, Latin) relating to satyr drama: through these testimonies all the salient aspects of satyrikòn will be studied, from its genesis (in obvious relation to the vexata quaestio of the "birth of tragedy") to its function per se and within the Dionysian tetralogy, from its terminology to its reception and survival in the Greek Middle Ages and in Rome. The choice of the testimonies will be made by the lecturer, but can be supplemented with reading proposals from the students.
The authors-witnesses considered will be both intellectuals still coeval with the satirical phenomenon such as Plato, Aristophanes and Aristotle (in the Poetics) as well as later and very late users such as the Alexandrian philologists, imperial writers (rhetoricians, biographers etc.), the Church Fathers and the Byzantine epigones (from John Malala to John Tzetze). Attention will also be given to epigraphic and papyrus evidence of the survival and even vitality of satirical texts in Greece and later in the various parts of the Roman Empire. Selected primary readings from surviving texts of ancient satyr drama will also take place when relevant (from the Euripidean Cyclops but also from fragmentary dramas, of papyraceous and non-papyraceous tradition).
I testi delle testimonianze letterarie, papiracee ed epigrafiche su cui sarà condotto il corso saranno messi a disposizione esclusivamente in edizione critica dalla docente in un "reader" che si costruirà progressivamente (fruibile attraverso il MOODLE di corso).
Alla lettura e conoscenza in lingua originale di queste testimonianze, e delle relative analisi, va aggiunta la lettura e conoscenza dei seguenti saggi:

- The texts of the literary, papyrus and epigraphic testimonies on which the course will be conducted will be made available - exclusively in a critical edition - by the lecturer in a 'reader' that will be built up progressively (accessible through the course MOODLE).

Oltre a svolgere autonomamente la lettura, con traduzione ed analisi, delle stesse testimonianze secondarie inerenti al dramma satiresco affrontate a lezione (recuperando le slides e i materiali didattici messi a disposizione sul MOODLE) e delle porzioni dei due saggi di letteratura secondaria sopra segnalati, gli studenti non frequentati dovranno leggere e tradurre per intero l'unico dramma satiresco superstite integralmente dell'antichità, il Ciclope di Euripide.
In addition to autonomously reading, translating and analysing the same secondary sources on satyr drama addressed in the lecture (retrieving the slides and teaching materials made available on MOODLE) and portions of the two essays mentioned above, non-attending students will have to readin Greek and translate the only surviving satirical drama from antiquity in its entirety, Euripides' Cyclops.
L’esame finale consisterà in una prova orale della durata orientativa di 30/max40min in cui gli studenti saranno chiamati a leggere e tradurre alcune delle testimonianze analizzate a lezione, fornendone, inoltre, un adeguato commento e contestualizzazione nel percorso storico-letterario compiuto insieme che deve essere conosciuto per intero nelle sue grandi linee.
Con riferimento ai due saggi indicati, gli studenti dovranno saper illustrare sulla base di queste letture i problemi e gli aspetti più significativi del teatro antico, dalla messa in scena alla suddivisione dei generi alla trasmissione postuma del testo.

The final examination will consist of an oral test of an approximate duration of 30/max. 40min. in which students will be asked to read and translate some of the testimonies analysed in the lessons, providing an adequate commentary and contextualisation within the historical-literary path taken together, which must be known in its broad outlines.
With reference to the two essays indicated, students must be able to illustrate on the basis of these readings the most significant problems and aspects of ancient theatre, from staging to the subdivision of genres to the posthumous transmission of the text.
