Lo studente acquisterà conoscenze su costanti e variabili nella diffusione delle opere classiche soprattutto latine nel Medioevo e nel Rinascimento
The student will acquire knowledge about constants and variables in the spread of classical works, especially Latin ones, in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

The assessment of knowledge will be the subject of the oral examination.
Lo studente sarà in grado di usare gli strumenti informatici e bibliografici necessari per ricostruire la storia di singole tradizioni manoscritte.
The student will be able to use the computer and bibliographic tools necessary to reconstruct the history of individual manuscript traditions.

The student will in case have to demonstrate (or anyway to discuss during the examination) the use of IT and bibliographic tools in specific cases.

Nozioni elementari di paleografia latina e di filologia classica.
Basic notions of Latin palaeography and classical philology.
Dai codices unici alle editiones principes instar codicum: tradizioni rare e valore dei testimoni a stampa.
Il corso affronterà questioni di metodo e di prassi ecdotica su testi o sezioni di testo dalla tradizione particolarmente rara, o riemersi in fasi successive e soprattutto dopo l’invenzione della stampa, talvolta solo in forma parziale o frammentaria (una particolare attenzione, infatti, sarà riservata a opere che ci sono giunte largamente incomplete, grazie a codices unici di estratti o a testimoni medievali ritrovati in età umanistica ma poi perduti come le Historiae di Sallustio o il Satyricon di Petronio). I principali esempi che saranno illustrati sono l’epistolario di Plinio il Giovane (soprattutto i libri VIII e X), il finale delle Heroides di Ovidio, alcuni testi geografici anonimi. Si discuterà anche di opere latine antiche o tardoantiche riscoperte negli ultimi due secoli (dal cosiddetto Anonymus Ecksteinii al presunto terzo libro del De Platone et eius dogmate di Apuleio) e di vere e proprie editiones principes digitali come quella del Liber glossarum.
Il corso illustrerà costantemente strumenti bibliografici ed informatici per ricerche storiche, prosopografiche e lessicali, utili in particolar modo al reperimento e all'analisi di paralleli per una completa ricostruzione di tradizioni dirette e indirette e di episodi di ricezione medievale e umanistica.
From codices unici to editiones principes instar codicum: rare traditions and the value of printed witnesses.
The course will address questions of method and of ecdotic practice on texts or sections of texts with a particularly rare tradition, or gradually re-emerged in later stages and above all after the invention of printing, sometimes only in partial or fragmentary form (particular attention will be reserved for works that have come down to us largely incomplete, thanks to codices unici of extracts or to medieval witnesses found during the humanistic age but subsequently lost, such as Sallust’s Historiae or Petronius’ Satyricon). The main examples that will be illustrated are Pliny the Younger’s letters (especially books VIII and X), the end of Ovid’s Heroides, some anonymous geographical texts. Ancient or late antique Latin works will be dealt with which were rediscovered in the last two centuries (from the so-called Anonymus Ecksteinii to the alleged third book of Apuleius’ De Platone et eius dogmate) and actual digital editiones principes such as that of the Liber glossarum.
The course will constantly illustrate bibliographic and computer tools for historical, prosopographical and lexical research, particularly useful for finding and analyzing parallels in view of a complete reconstruction of direct and indirect traditions and of episodes of medieval reception.
Non è previsto uno specifico testo d’esame. Il materiale necessario sarà fornito o indicato dal docente durante le lezioni o caricato sulle piattaforme al servizio dei corsi. Sarà comunque richiesta un’adeguata capacità d’interpretazione e comprensione del libro ottavo dell’epistolario di Plinio il giovane nell’edizione C. Plini Caecili Secundi Epistularum libri decem, recognovit brevique adnotatione critica instruxit R. A. B. Mynors, Oxonii, e typographeo Clarendoniano, 1963 (Scriptorum Classicorum Bibliotheca Oxoniensis), o successive ristampe, con prefazione, testo e relativo apparato critico, in aggiunta a queste letture:
1) L.D. Reynolds-N.G. Wilson, Copisti e filologi, Padova, Antenore, 1987 (3a ed. e successive rist.); chi al punto 2 sceglierà il terzo o il quarto titolo potrà saltare il capitolo sull’Oriente greco.

Chi al punto 2 sceglierà il libro di Paolo Chiesa potrà preparare articoli anche relativi alle tradizioni trattate in quell’opera (Livio, Quintiliano Inst., Catullo, Historia Augusta, Virgilio, Lucrezio, Tacito Historiae e Annales, Plauto, Seneca Epist., Petronio, Lucano, Apuleio Met., Sallustio Iug. e Cat., Eutropio, Festo), ma per un totale di almeno 60 pp.
There is no specific examination text. Necessary material will be provided or indicated by the teacher during the lessons. In any case, an adequate capacity of interpretation and understanding of the preface of the whole edition and of the text of book VIII, with relative critical apparatus, of C. Plini Caecili Secundi Epistularum libri decem, recognovit brevique adnotatione critica instruxit R. A. B. Mynors, Oxonii, e typographeo Clarendoniano, 1963 (Scriptorum Classicorum Bibliotheca Oxoniensis), or reprints, will be required, in addition to these readings:

3) Some articles from Texts and Transmission. A Survey of the Latin Classics, ed. by L.D. Reynolds, Oxford 1983 (repr. 1986), for a total of at least 30 pp., to be independently chosen, or to be established in agreement with the teacher together with any other specific title (especially for non-attending students). Those who choose Paolo Chiesa's book at point 2 will have permission to prepare articles, for a total of at least 60 pages, relating to the traditions dealt with in that work (Livy, Quintilian Inst., Catullus, Historia Augusta, Vergl, Lucretius, Tacitus Historiae and Annales, Plautus, Seneca Epist., Petronius, Lucanus, Apuleius Met., Sallustius Iug. and Cat., Eutropius, Festus).
Si veda sotto "Bibliografia e materiale didattico": si richiederà in ogni caso o la scelta di un secondo testo fra quelli previsti al punto 2 o la presentazione di una relazione su un argomento e su letture da concordare con il docente.
See under "Bibliography (and teaching material)": in any case, either the choice of a second text among those listed at point 2 or the presentation of a report on a given subject and on readings to be agreed with the teacher will be required.
L'esame si svolgerà come prova finale orale (colloquio con il docente). S'intenderà che la prova non è superata se il candidato non saprà esprimersi adeguatamente, se non conoscerà la terminologia filologica e se dimostrerà di non sapersi orientare nell'interpretazione dell'apparato di un'edizione critica.
All'inizio dell'esame si chiederà di leggere un passo dell'edizione consigliata del testo latino, di tradurlo e di analizzare il significato e il valore degli errori e delle varianti registrate in apparato in rapporto alle conoscenze acquisite sulla tradizione dell'opera. Poi il candidato dovrà rispondere a domande precise sui tre punti indicati nella sezione sulla bibliografia.
The examination will take place as an oral final test (interview with the teacher). It is understood that the test is not passed if the candidate does not know how to express himself properly, if he does not know the philological terminology and if he proves that he cannot orient himself in the interpretation of the apparatus of a critical edition.
At the beginning of the exam, students will be asked to read a passage from the recommended edition of the Latin text, to translate it and to analyze the meaning and value of the errors and variants recorded in the apparatus, in relation to the notions acquired about the tradition of the work. Then the candidate will have to answer specific questions on the three points listed in the bibliographical section.
