Il corso propone l’acquisizione di competenze di base nello studio della letteratura greca e latina della tarda antichità (III-VII sec.), e la conoscenza di testi specifici di rilevante valore per la formazione della cultura europea.
The course will provide the acquisition of basic skills in the study of Greek and Latin literature of Late Antiquity (3rd to 7th centuries), as well as the knowledge of specific texts relevant to the formation of European culture.
La verifica delle conoscenze si svolgerà attraverso un unico esame orale al termine del corso.
The acquisition of knowledge will be verified by a single oral examination at the end of the course.
Al termine del corso gli studenti saranno in grado di svolgere ricerche sui testi delle cultura letteraria tardoantica, di analizzare le fonti e di inquadrare i materiali nello sviluppo storico della disciplina.
By the end of the course, students will be able to conduct research on texts of Late Antique culture, to analyse sources and to place materials within the historical development of the discipline.
Le capacità saranno guidate attraverso la discussione interattiva sui testi durante le lezioni e verificate nell’esame orale finale.
Skills will be tested through interactive discussion of texts during the lectures and verified in the final oral examination. Tests are not planned during the course, but the final grading will duly take into account the level of participation of the students.
Gli studenti potranno acquisire sensibilità critica per i problemi specifici dei testi di dele letterature della tarda antichità.
Students will become fully familiar with the specific features and problems of late antique culture.
Durante le lezioni verrà sollecitata la partecipazione degli studenti alle problematiche relative ai passi letti in aula.
Students will be invited to actively participate to the lessons and to discuss Greek and Latin texts proposed.

Good knowledge (average to high) of Greek and Latin, and basic philological skills.
Lezioni frontali con il supporto di ppt e tecnologie multimediali adeguate, interattive e partecipate; esercitazioni di lettura di apparati critici. Approfondimenti bibliografici su singoli temi saranno assegnati sulla base degli interessi e delle richieste degli studenti.
I materiali didattici (testi critici) saranno messi a disposizione dal docente in formato PDF sulla pagina Moodle del corso.
Lectures with the support of slides and appropriate multimedia technologies, open to discussion and exchange both with the lecturer and peer-to-peer. Further bibliographical insights into individual topics will be provided on the basis of students' interests and demands.
Teaching materials (critical editions of Menander) will be made available by the lecturer in PDF format (in the Moodle page of the course).
Letteratura e politica: consenso e dissenso nell’età di Giustiniano.
Dopo una breve introduzione alla cultura tardoantica, il corso prenderà in esame testi letterari che testimonino la costruzione del consenso e il manifestarsi del dissenso sotto il regno dell’imperatore Giustiniano. Verranno letti testi di Procopio di Cesarea (dalle Guerre e dalla Storia Segreta), di Paolo Silenziario (dalla Descrizione di Santa Sofia) l’anonimo Dialogo della scienza politica.
Literature and Politics: Consensus and Dissent in the Age of Justinian.
After a brief introduction to the culture of late antiquity, the course will examine literary texts that attest to the construction of consensus and the manifestation of dissent under the reign of the Emperor Justinian. Texts by Procopius of Caesarea (from the Wars and the Secret History), Paulus Silentiarius (from the Description of Hagia Sophia) and the anonymous Dialogue on Political Science will be read.

L'esame consisterà in un’unica prova orale finale (della durata orientativa di 35-45 min.) articolata in due momenti:
- a) due domande sulla retorica in età imperiale e tarda
- b) lettura, traduzione e commento di tre passi dei testi in programma
The examination will consist of a single final oral test (approximate duration: 35-45 min.) divided into two parts:
- a) two questions on politics and culture in the 6th century
- b) reading, translation and commentary of three passages from the texts analysed in class
