Il corso di Economia Politica si propone di fornire le nozioni di microeconomia e di macroeconomia fondamentali per la comprensione del funzionamento delle moderne economie.
The course aims at providing the student with the basic knowledge of economics that is a prerequisite to the understanding of the economic system, both from a microeconomic and from a macroeconomic perspective.

In order to better understand the course the student should have a basic knowledge of analytical mathematics (concept of function, of dependent and independent variable, use of a system of Cartesian axes for the representation of a function)

- Supply and demand theory. The elasticity of demand. The relationship between elasticity and total expenditure
- Microeconomics. Consumer theory through the study of objective and subjective elements: the budget line and the map of indifference curves. Maximizing satisfaction.
- The theory of supply. Enterprise costs and production. Choosing the optimum amount of production. The function of the total product and the marginal product.
- Market structures: perfect competition and monopoly. The manufacturer's profit maximising behaviour. The graphic construction of the relative balances attracts the medium and marginal functions and through the total functions. The social cost of the monopoly. Natural monopoly and its regulation.
- Imperfect competition: oligopoly and monopolistic competition, basic knowledge of game theory.
- The economics of the public sector
- Macroeconomics. The real sect and the monetary sector. National income accounting. Aggregate demand and aggregate expenditure. The balance of income and production.
- The consumption function and the saving function. Aggregate expenditure: income-dependent and autonomous components. The balance of aggregate expenditure (Keynesian cross).
- The importance of the autonomous part of aggregate expenditure with particular reference to investment and public expenditure. The function of investment.
- The theory of the multiplier. The multiplier of expenditure (deficit spending). The tax multiplier. The budget multiplier in balance. The multiplier financed through taxation. The multiplier in the presence of foreign trade.
- Banks and the monetary system. The Central Bank and its functions.
- Monetary policy and fiscal policy.
- The synthesis between the real sector and the monetary sector. The IS-LM system

Non-attending students are advised not to take the written test and to contact the teacher for more detailed information about the oral exam.
Esame finale orale.
Oral examination consisting of an interview between the student and the teacher. Students must demonstrate they have understood at least the fundamental notions and must be able to comment on each subject indicated in the syllabus (teaching content) using the appropriate terminology. The student may be asked to provide written answers (usually in the form of graphs) as part of the interview with the teacher.
Attending students can also take a written test at the end of the course on one half of the programme (which part of the programme will be indicated during the semester). The written test is NOT MANDATORY. Non-attending students are advised non to take the written test, as the test will be based more on the lectures than on the handbook.
