Al termine del corso lo studente avrà acquisito conoscenze in merito ai fondamenti teorici delle relazioni internazionali, sulla identificazione dei fattori che determinano la qualità delle relazioni tra gli stati e sugli aspetti fondamentali del sistema politico dell’Unione Europea.
the end of the course, the student will have acquired knowledge over the theoretical foundations of International Relations, on the factors that determine the nature and quality of the inter-state relations, and on the fundamental aspects of the political system of the European Union.
La verifica delle conoscenze acquisite avverrà tramite la valutazione di un esame orale.
The assessment of the acquired knowledge will be done through an oral exam.
Al termine del corso:
- Lo studente sarà in grado di discutere oralmente le problematiche relative alle teorie delle relazioni internazionali e al sistema politico dell’Unione Europea.
- Lo studente frequentante sarà in grado di preparare presentazioni relative ad alcuni casi concreti suggeriti dal docente, che verranno interpretati alla luce delle teorie delle relazioni internazionali.
At the end of the course:
The student will be able to orally present problems related to the Theories of International Relations and the political system of the European Union.
Attending students will be able to prepare presentations on some empirical cases among those proposed by the teacher, which will be interpreted through the lenses of the IR theories.
- Durante le sessioni di esame avverrà un colloquio tramite il quale sarà verificata la capacità dello studente di discutere oralmente le problematiche relative alle teorie delle relazioni internazionali e al sistema politico dell’Unione Europea.
- Gli studenti frequentanti potranno preparare presentazioni relative ad alcuni casi concreti suggeriti dal docente. La verifica sulla capacità di interpretazione dei casi concreti alla luce delle teorie della relazioni internazionali avverrà tramite l’esposizione in classe.

- Durante i seminari l’accuratezza e lo stile nel porre questioni e domande al personale esterno ed esperto saranno verificate direttamente dal docente.
- Sensitivities developed on the problems of inter-State relations and of the European Union will be verified through an in-class debate, which will always be favoured and stimulated.
- During seminars, the teacher will evaluate the appropriate skills and style of the students to ask questions to the external speakers.
- E’ ritenuto utile che lo studente abbia una buona conoscenza della geografia fisica e politica e sia sufficientemente informato sulle criticità più attuali dei contesti internazionale e europeo. L’abitudine alla consultazione di quotidiani, riviste e blog di approfondimento è ben accolta.
- E’ richiesta la propeduticità obbligatoria del corso di Scienza Politica, avendone superato con profitto positivo la prova d’esame relativa.
- The student is suggested to have a prior good knowledge of natural and political geography and to be sufficiently aware of the current problems in international and European scenarios. The habit of reading newspapers, magazines, journals and web-blogs on IR and EU is recommended.
- To gain access to the exam, students MUST have passed the exam of Political Science.
- Le lezioni si svolgono in modo frontale, a volte con l’ausilio di slide.
- Durante il corso possono tenersi seminari in codocenza con la presenza di esperti delle teorie delle relazioni internazionali o del sistema politico dell’Unione Europea (nel passato ricordiamo la presenza, tra gli altri, di parlamentari europei e di esperti del centro di ricerca IAI).
- Lo studente può interagire con il docente direttamente in classe, tramite i ricevimenti (vedere web-page del docente sul sito internet del dipartimento), o per posta elettronica del docente.
- E’ previsto l’uso parziale di lingue diverse dall'italiano (l’inglese) per la consultazione di alcuni articoli o blog di approfondimento.
- Le lezioni incoraggeranno costantemente la partecipazione ed il confronto.
- The course will be conducted through face-to-face lessons, somtimes with the use of slides.
- During the course, seminars may be held by the teacher with the presence of IR and/or EU experts (noteworhy, in the past, was the presence, among the others, of EU parliamentarians and IAI experts).
- The student can interact with the teacher directly in class, at the office hours (see teacher’s web-page on the Department’s website), or by e-mails addressed to the teacher.
- It is foreseen the use of languages other than Italian (English) to read some specialized articles or blogs.
- Students’ participation and debate in class are strongly encouraged.
Il programma del corso si divide in due parti.
Nella prima parte saranno trattate le Teorie delle Relazioni Internazionali con particolare riferimento a: la definizione delle relazioni internazionali come disciplina accademica, le principali teorie interpretative delle relazioni internazionali (realismo, liberalismo, approccio della società internazionale, costruttivismo, economia politica internazionale), l’analisi della politica estera e la discussione di alcuni casi e crisi concrete. La prima parte del corso sarà tenuta anche dal Professor Eugenio Pizzimenti.
La seconda parte riguarderà i temi più rilevanti dell’Unione Europea. Inizialmente è prevista la presentazione del quadro d’insieme del percorso storico di integrazione e la descrizione delle istituzioni principali (Commissione, Consiglio dell'Unione Europea, Consiglio europeo, Parlamento europeo) e delle altre (Comitato economico e sociale, il Comitato delle Regioni, le agenzie europee, il sistema europeo delle banche Centrali, i Partiti Politici Europei). Questo quadro d’insieme consentirà la discussione di politiche speficiche, come i processi decisionali, la politica economica e finanziaria, le relazioni esterne, la sicurezza interna, le politiche di solidarietà e alcuni temi specifici, come la crisi di legittimazione dell’Unione, il deficit democratico, l'integrazione differenziata, la crisi dell’Eurozona, le difficoltà del sistema di Schengen e le potenzialità della politica estera e di sicurezza comune.
The course will be divided into two parts.
The first part, the Theories of International Relations, will deal with reference to: the definition of IR as academic discipline, the main interpretative IR theories (realism, liberalism, international society approach, constructivism, international political economy), the foreign policy analysis and the deepening of concrete cases and crises. The first part will be taught also by professor Eugenio Pizzimenti.
The second part will cover the relevant aspects of the European Union. Initially, the teacher will provide a general overview of the history of the integration process and the description of the main institutions (Commission, Council of the European Union, European Council, European Parliament) and others (Economic and Social Committee, the Committee of the Regions, the European Agencies, the European Systems of the Central Banks, the European Political Parties). This overview will allow the discussion of specific policies, such as decision-making processes, economic and financial policy, external relations, internal security, solidarity policies, and of specific themes, such as the Union’s legitimacy crisis, the democratic deficit, the differentiated integration, the Eurozone crisis, the difficulties of the Schengen system, and the potential of the Common Foreign and Security Policy.

- L'esame si terrà esclusivamente in FORMA ORALE in unica sessione sui due moduli del corso. La prova orale consiste in un colloquio tra il candidato e il docente o i suoi collaboratori.
- La prova non è superata se il candidato mostra di non essere in grado di esprimersi in modo chiaro e di usare la terminologia corretta, oppure se il candidato mostrerà ripetutamente l'incapacità di mettere in relazione parti del programma e nozioni che deve usare in modo congiunto per rispondere in modo corretto ad una domanda.
- Gli studenti frequentanti possono svolgere una prova scritta in itinere sul modulo di Teoria delle Relazioni Internazionali durante il corso. La prova scritta consiste in 33 domande a risposta multipla (tre possibili risposte per ogni domanda di cui una corretta). La prova verte sulle Teorie delle Relazioni Internazionali. La prova scritta dura 30 minuti. La prova scritta è superata se lo studente ha ottenuto almeno 18 punti (18 risposte corrette).
- Chi ha sostenuto e superato la prova in itinere sostiene l’orale sulla parte relativa all’Unione Europea.
- The exam will be conducted exclusively ORALLY in a single session covering both modules of the course. The oral examination consists of a dialogue between the candidate and the teacher or their assistants. • The exam is not passed if the candidate demonstrates an inability to express themselves clearly and use the correct terminology, or if the candidate repeatedly shows an inability to relate parts of the curriculum and concepts that they must use together to respond correctly to a question.
- Attending students may take a written “in itinere” test on the Theories of International Relations module during the course. The written test consists of 33 multiple-choice questions (three possible answers for each question, one correct). The test focuses on International Relations Theories. The written test lasts for 30 minutes. The written test is passed if the student has obtained at least 18 points (18 correct answers).
- Those who have taken and passed the “in itinere” test will undergo an oral examination on the part related to the European Union.
