Le emergenze sanitarie nella storia. Esperienze, pratiche e rappresentazioni.

Health emergencies in history. Experiences, practices and representations.
During the course, various health emergencies caused by infectious diseases, from the Middle Ages to today, will be reconstructed and analyzed, with a focus on the emergencies of XIX century and first half of XX centuries (in particular, in correspondence with the Great War). The course will present many case studies about some infectious diseases selected for their relevance, such as plague, smallpox, cholera, malaria, tuberculosis, typhus, Spanish flu. The course will adopt a global perspective, with focus on Europe, North America and, particularly, Italy.
After brief overview about the disease (etiology, symptoms, mode of spread, morbidity and mortality), I will observe its impact on society, through the analysis of the strategies adopted to manage the emergency, the health countermeasures and the reactions of the civilian, military and health institutions, the consequences on the health systems (also in relation to the medical knowledge of the time), the reactions of the populations, considered in their different social groups. The cultural impact of the diseases treated will also be examined.
During the course, we will observe how the methods of managing health emergencies have evolved over time, impacting not only on medical approaches and theory, but above all on the relationship between society, disease and health.
Provisional lesson plan:

- War and infectious disease
- The Spanish flu pandemic: the global dimension, the national framework

Modulo Prof.ssa Fabbroni:
Module Prof. Fabbroni:
Presentation and discussion of a paper on analysis and response in a humanitarian crisis. Possible group work.
Mod. Francesco Cutolo
Two examination methods:
- Oral exam
- Seminars by students (for attending students)
Attending students could also hold a seminar on a topic agreed with the teacher. The topic must be presented in a seminar presentation in the final part of the course (30 min). After that, the student must turn in a paper on the topics (max. 20 thousand characters), which will be returned, with a vote, during the oral exam. The seminar presentation and the paper will contribute to the final evaluation
The syllabus will be reduced: the oral exam will cover the paper and the content of the lessons (no lecture).
