The student who successfully completes the course will have been in contact with language and some aspect of mathematical raisoning, taking account of philosophical problems on nature of mathematical objects and mathematical thinking.
The student will be assessed on his/her demonstrated ability to discuss the main course contents and to organise an effective exposition of a paper/book on a subject.

Numbers. Euclidean and non euclidean Geometry. Graphs. Some result in Topology: Euler Poincare' characteristic, Jordan Theorem, classification of surfaces, knots. A part of the course will be dedicated to discussion on philosophical aspects.
Recommended reading includes the following works; Courant Robbins . Che cos'e' la matematica, Bollati Boringhieri Devlin, Il linguaggio della Matematica, Bollati Boringhieri Lolli. Discorso sulla matematica, Bollati Boringhieri. Further bibliography will be indicated.
