The student who successfully completes the course will have good ability to recognize the material and technique, also composite, the main types of artifacts, namely sculpture (wood, stone, bronze, plaster, terracotta) and paintings (fresco, tempera, oil, acrylic) from antiquity to contemporary. He will have ability also to correlate the technical aspects with the phenomena of tradition/innovation, with the cultural orientations and willingness stylistic and expressive, as well as contextual data such as organization of artistic production, characteristics of the client and market. He will have knowledge of the history of the conservation and restoration, as well as basic knowledge of the main factors of degradation and the current procedures for preventive conservation and restoration of artifacts.

È necessario maturare consuetudine con l'osservazione diretta e attenta di manufatti storico-artistici in musei, chiese ecc.

L'esame è ovviamente necessario per richiedere tesi triennali in Storia delle tecniche, della conservazione e del restauro.
È inoltre fortemente consigliato per chi intenda seguire alla laurea magistrale il corso di Storia e tecnica del restauro.
The exam is obviously necessary to apply for a three-year thesis in Storia delle tecniche, della conservazione e del restauro.

Lezioni frontali in aula basate su esame delle opere, lettura delle fonti (trattatistica, letteratura artistica, testimonianze etc.), approccio alla diagnostica scientifica, con l'ausilio di presentazioni power point che per problemi di copyright NON potranno essere distribuite né caricate su moodle.
Se il numero di studenti lo consentirà, alcune lezioni verranno svolte presso il Museo nazionale di S. Matteo, il Museo di Palazzo Reale, il Museo delle Sinopie-Camposanto monumentale a Pisa, e alcuni laboratori di restauro a Pisa e Lucca.
Nella preparazione dell'esame, si raccomanda l'attento studio delle immagini contenuti nel CD allegato al testo in Bibliografia L. Martini, Storia e teoria del restauro delle opere d'arte.

If the number of students will allow, some lessons will be held at the Museo nazionale di S. Matteo, Museo di Palazzo Reale, Museo delle Sinopie-Camposanto monumentale in Pisa, and some restoration workshops in Pisa and Lucca.
In the preparation of the exam, we recommend the careful study of the images contained on the CD attached to the text in Bibliography L. Martini, History and theory of restoration of works of art.
Titolo del corso: Materie e tecniche dell'arte dall’Antichità al Contemporaneo
Il corso è dedicato alle materie, ai procedimenti realizzativi, alle conoscenze teoriche e tecniche in particolare della scultura (in legno, pietra, bronzo, stucco, terracotta), e della pittura (affresco, tempera, olio, acrilico), intese come elemento importante del giudizio storico sui manufatti artistici.
Le principali tecniche artistiche verranno esaminate nelle loro trasformazioni storiche e nelle loro relazioni con i fenomeni di tradizione/innovazione, con gli orientamenti culturali e le volontà stilistiche e espressive, nonché con dati di contesto quali ruolo sociale dell’artista, organizzazione della produzione artistica, caratteristiche della committenza e del mercato.
Inoltre, di ciascuna tecnica verranno illustrati, attraverso casi esemplari, i principali fattori di assestamento e degrado.
Infine, verranno affrontati i lineamenti della storia, dal Medioevo ad oggi, delle diverse culture e modalità di conservazione e restauro.
The course is devoted to materials, procedures of realization, theoretical and technical knowledge in particular of the sculpture and painting, designed as an important element the historical judgment on works of art. The main artistic techniques will be examined in their historical transformations and their relation with the phenomena of tradition/innovation, with the cultural orientations and willingness stylistic and expressive, as well as contextual data such as artist's social role, organization of artistic production, characteristics of the client and the market.
Each technique will be illustrated through case studies, the main factors of adjustment and degradation.
Finally, we will tackle the lineaments of history from the Middle Ages to the present, the different cultures and ways of conservation and restoration

Il corso inizierà martedì 14 novembre e terminerà giovedì 21 dicembre.
IL corso di complessive 36 ore accademiche si svolgerà in 12 lezioni (in aula e se possibile esterne) di 3 ore accademiche ciascuna, cioè di effettive 2 ore 15 minuti + intervallo di 15 minuti, con il seguente orario: martedì e giovedì ore 16-18.30.
È possiile che le lezioni esterne nei musei e laboratori durino più delle lezioni in aula.
The course will begin on Tuesday 14 November and will end on Thursday 21 December. The course of a total of 36 academic hours will take place in 12 lessons (classroom and if possible outside) of 3 academic hours each, ie 2 hours 15 minutes + 15 minutes interval, with the following schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays 16am- 18:30.
