Il corso si prefigge di fornire agli studenti gli strumenti per analizzare le principali linee evolutive della relazione tra Stati Uniti ed Europa, che costituisce una delle alleanze fondamentali della politica internazionale, con particolare attenzione dagli anni ’40 del Novecento fino agli avvenimenti più recenti. La fine della guerra fredda e le incertezze sull’evoluzione del sistema internazionale nel XXI secolo sollevano molti problemi sulla futura direzione di questa relazione . In particolare verranno sottolineati gli aspetti di carattere politico e strategico ( il sostegno americano al processo di integrazione europea, la creazione e gli sviluppi dell’Alleanza atlantica, la crisi del sistema bipolare, l’ascesa degli Stati Uniti a “unica superpotenza” negli anni Novanta, l’impatto dell’11 settembre sulle relazioni transatlantiche, ecc…) con l'obiettivo di chiarirne i profili più problematici e di far acquisire agli studenti la comprensione non solo del rapporto tra gli USA e l'UE ma anche delle relazioni di alcuni Stati europei con Washington.
The aim of the course is to provide an advanced knowledge of the the relationship between Europe and the United States of America , one of the dominant alliances in international politics. The events of World War II and the Cold War provided a basis for the development of an interdependent relationship, but the end of the Cold War and the uncertainties over the shape of the international system in the 21st Century, raises questions about the future direction of this relationship. The module covers the basis of contemporary transatlantic politics, with the aim to make students familiar with the debates and issues within the transatlantic relationship today. While the focus is predominantly on the European Union, we will also look at key Member States and their relations with the US where appropriate.

Alla fine del corso lo studente sarà in grado di analizzare criticamente attraverso l'uso della letteratura scientifica i temi centrali delle relazioni transatlantiche contemporanee, comprendendo le affinità e le divergenze nelle posizioni statunitensi e europee e avrà la capacità di condurre e sviluppare autonomamente le proprie ricerche .
By the end of this course students should be able to critically analyze complex ideas with relation to contemporary transatlantic politics and should also have an understanding of the similarities and differences of American and European positions of transatlantic issues and policymaking.
They will also be able to conduct independent research in the area of transatlantic relations and to develop research skills through the use of the Library, internet and e-mail based resources.
Attraverso seminari e letture di approfondimento lo studente acquisirà la capacità di ricostruire l'evoluzione e le fasi salienti delle relazioni transatlantiche.
Through seminars and dedicated literature the student will be able to retrace the evolution of the transatlantic relations, and will have an awareness of the main policy issues in current debates within transatlantic politics.
Al termine del corso lo studente avrà acquisito la capacità di valutare , all'interno di una comprensione storica di lungo periodo, quali sono i temi centrali della relazione transatlantica e, basandosi anche su letture e approfondimenti sarà in grado di discutere in modo argomentato le principali questioni che coinvolgono il legame tra Europa e Stati uniti.
By the end of this course students should be able to critically analyze with an historical perspective the most relevant events of the transatlantic relationship and demonstrate good knowledge of the current debates within transatlantic politics.
They should also have an awareness of the main policy issues in contemporary transatlantic relations, including the role of NATO, the so-called 'War on Terror', the politics of intervention, and the changing distribution of power in the international arena, and should be familiar with a range of contemporary literature on transatlantic relations.
In seguito ai seminari e alle letture di approfondimento lo studente sarà soggetto ad una verifica orale.
Following to the seminars and literature the student will be subject to an oral discussion.

The student must have a good knowledge of contemporary and international history from post-World War II to recent years.
Il corso prende in esame principalmente tre aspetti della relazione transatlantica:
le questioni della sicurezza, dall'avvio della Guerra fredda fino alla guerra al terrorismo e l'evoluzione della NATO;
le questioni economiche, mettendo in luce sia l'interdipendenza che la competizione tra gli Stati uniti e l'Europa mano a mano che l'Unione europea rafforza la propria integrazione economica;
il "soft power" americano e la sua influenza sui paesi europei.
The course willl focus on three key themes:
security, from the Cold War to the "War on Terror" and the transformation of NATO;
economics, emphasizing both interdependence and competition between the United States and Europe as the European Union strengthens its economic integration;
American "soft power"and its influence on Europeans partners.

L'esame è composto da una prova orale. La prova orale consiste in un colloquio tra il candidato e il docente, o anche tra il candidato e altri collaboratori del docente titolare.
L'esame è superato se il candidato risponde correttamente alle domande sulla parte basilare del corso.
The exam consists of an oral exam. The oral test consists of a colloquium between the candidate and the teacher, or even between the candidate and other collaborators of the teacher.
The exam is passed if the candidate correctly answers the questions about the basic part of the course.
